Freeman Thorp (1844—1922) was born in Geneva, Ohio.
He studied portrait painting and at twenty-seven began to paint statesmen in a studio built for his use on the roof of the U.S. Capitol.
Thorp painted four other presidents—Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Cleveland—among a number of eminent Americans, including Chief Justice Salmon Chase, Horace Greeley, and Robert E. Lee.

According to artist Freeman Thorp, this portrait of Abraham Lincoln was originally executed in approximately 1879 from life sketches in a specially created studio on the fourth floor of the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol.
Four decades later the portrait was purchased from Thorp for the Capitol.
Thorp’s other work in the Senate is the oil portrait of Assistant Doorkeeper Isaac Bassett.

In 1876 members of the Senate commissioned artist Freeman Thorp to paint a portrait of Isaac Bassett as a “testimonial of their personal regard and of their high appreciation of the intelligence, the promptness, the accuracy, and the conscientious fidelity” that had exemplified Bassett’s 45 years of service up to that point.
Thorp was born in Ohio and worked extensively in photography before turning to oil painting.
Seven of Thorp’s works are also located in the House wing of the Capitol.

He sketched a portrait of Abraham Lincoln in February 1861 when Lincoln stopped for a speech in Geneva on route to his inauguration in Washington, D.C. State police Sergeant Kevin Barrick says the Cessna 152 piloted by 35-year old Arthur Thorpe of Washington encountered engine trouble while flying at 4,000 feet.
Thorp was forced to find a place to put the aircraft on the ground and that place just happened to be U.S. 17 near Port Royal.

He is survived by one son, James "Jimmy" R. Crews; his stepmother, Isabelle Crews of Madison Heights; one sister, Louise C. Daubert of White Plains, NY; six half-sisters, Betty Carwile, Edith Duffield, Phyllis Evera, Dorothy Freeman, Jean Thorp and Joann Woody, all of Madison Heights.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Epps Crews.
