Freeport was well on its way to being a center for business until 1802 when trade shifted to the larger port at the village of Erie.
Land use in the township continues to be mainly in agriculture, and throughout the area can be found many Century Farms, that is, farms that have been owned and worked by one family and its descendants for 100 years or more.

Freeport Area School District community is made up of the Borough of Freeport and South Buffalo Township, in the southwest corner of Armstrong County, and Buffalo Township in the southeast corner of Butler County, encompassing a region approximately ten miles out from Freeport, in north, northeast, and westerly directions.

This township has Clover township on the north and Rose and Oliver on the east while on the west is Clarion county, and Ringgold forms the southern boundary, being separated from the latter by Little Sandy while Red Bank flows along its western boundary.

Brady is one of the border townships of the county, situated north of the Juniata River.

The ore was chiefly brought from Franklin township by canal and later by railroad, although a quantity of the fossil ores found in Brady were combined with them, producing a metal which had a most excellent reputation among manufacturers, and which was used to a large extent to produce imitation Russia sheet iron.

Before 1740 Pennsylvania traders had established posts in the Indian villages of the area; and in 1749 Celoron de Blainville, a French army officer, was commissioned by the governor-general of France to claim the region for Louis XV by burying lead plates along the Allegheny River.
It was traversed by the western division of the Pennsylvania Canal and is the oldest non-Indian town in the county.
In the Freeport cemetery (junction of SR 0028 and SR 0356, north of Freeport) is the grave of Massa Harbison.

Lillie Bullock, a Freeport quilter for 25 years, has literally pulled her family history together and put it into a 77-block mammoth quilt that stretches over 12 feet tall and almost nine feet wide.
Through her quilt, Bullock is able to tell a part of Freeport's history, drawing on more than 50 years of experience in the community.
"Freeport hasn't changed that much, although it's better than it used to be," she comments, telling about how fls used to live on one side of town and whites on the other.

 Butler Freeport Trail History
On June 1, 1888, the road was leased to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for a period of forty years, the rental being the net earnings.
Built as a branch of the Western Pennsylvania Railroad between Butler and Freeport it tapped the quality limestone deposits needed by the growing Pittsburgh steel industry.
The Freeport Historical Society is raising funds to refurbish Valley (Mickey's) Mill, a 19th century grist mill which is just a block from our trail in Laneville.

 Description of the Geology of Allegheny County Pennsylvania
In its center, Pittsburgh, the chief city of Western Pennsylvania, at the head of the Ohio river, occupies the space between the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, having Allegheny City opposite to it on the triangular flood-plain of the Ohio west of the Allegheny, and South Pittsburgh stretching slong the southern river bank.
The bed extends beneath the southern townships into Washington county, its outcrop gradually, but not uniformly, falling lower and lower on the Monongahela slopes, until it passes beneath water level at Bridgeport, 56 miles above Pittsburgh.

Although the Freeport Bridge was included in the region's Transportation Improvement Program when the TIP originated in 1994, making it eligible for federal funding, it was taken off two years ago for unknown reasons.
Freeport Councilman Jim Seagriff testified to no avail at four different regional hearings this year to try to get bridge funding restored on the updated 2007-10 transportation plan recently passed by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, the transportation planning agency for the 10-county area.

 Description of the Geology of Lawrence County Pennsylvania
All the upland east of the Neshannock and east and west of the Beaver river is occupied by the Ferriferous limestone supporting the three Kittanning coal beds; and in Big Beaver and Perry townships the high divides hold also the two Freeport coal beds, and even some of the lowest Barren measures.
The Freeport upper coal (70` lower) locally known as the "Five-foot" and "Four-foot" bed, is over 6` thick in several mines near the north line of Little Beaver Township, but thinner and poorer elsewhere; its underlying limestone seems wanting.
In the S.W. corner of Plain grove township it is "block coal" (4`) and was used raw in the old furnace on Taylor’s run.

 Richland Township | Township History
Located near the center of the township, with a large level lot for expansion, the Richland School building cost $71,000 and opened with an enrollment of 350.
The earliest of the churches now located in Richland Township is the Methodist Church at Bakerstown, which was organized in 1832, the original building having been erected on ground donated by James Jones, and the brick for the same was made from clay taken from the old Baker Cemetery.
The church was built in 1838 and remodeled in 1883, was partially burned in 1890, and rebuilt in 1891.

The permit authorizes Amfire Mining of Latrobe, Westmoreland County to conduct room-and-pillar mining in 2,929.4 acres of the Upper Freeport Coal Seam.
Room-and-pillar mining is a traditional mining method in which miners leave pillars of coal to support the roof and prevent subsidence as mining progresses.
The Upper Freeport Coal Seam is present throughout much of western Pennsylvania, having an average thickness of four feet in the permitted area.

After discussing the matter with the Central District Printing and Telegraph Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (later Bell of Pennsylvania), certain officials of that Company suggested that those interested in telephone service North of Pittsburgh should organize a local company which could be connected to the Telephone Company by trunk lines.
Freeport, Pennsylvania originally had telephone service from the Freeport Telephone Company.
In downtown Freeport, there is an apartment complex that to this day (circa October 2005) that still has a sign that says "Freeport Telephone Company" over the doorway.
