Freer came from a humble background and rose by his own abilities and in 1880 he founded a Detroit company which produced heavy rolling stock for the railways in partnership with his former employer, Colonel Frank J. Hecker; this later became the Peninsular Car Works.
Freer's correspondence with JW is in the University of Glasgow, and JW's replies are in the Freer Gallery.
Freer enjoyed an amiable friendship with the often irascible JW, and his frequent correspondence was often answered by Beatrix.

Most of the major works that Freer acquired during his first 12 years (1884-1896) as a collector were images of beautiful women by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938), or Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921).
These striking works (including notable Ding, Cizhou, Jian, and Jizhou wares from the Freer's collection) were produced as a result of important developments in Chinese ceramic technology, including the use of streaked dark glazes and different modes of decoration.

Based on the Freer's rich but rarely-exhibited collection of large storage vessels, this exhibition presents a selection of the biggest and boldest jars made in East, Southeast, and West Asia between the second millennium BCE and the 16th century.
The selection of ceramic and bronze vessels on view begins at the important juncture between the end of the Neolithic pottery tradition and the emergence of the metalworking tradition (around 2000 B.C.), and stops at the end of the Bronze Age and the rise of glazed stoneware (around 200 A.D.).

His taste for the works of Whistler and of Asian masters, and discovery of a close kinship between the two, resulted in a warm friendship with Whistler and the development of an unrivaled collection of his works; this included the Peacock Room from the Leyland house, London, which had Whistler decorations.
The gallery also contains a fine collection of Chinese and Japanese paintings and art objects and a remarkable collection of antique glazed pottery with examples from Egypt, Persia, India, China, Korea, and Japan.
