  Freeserve
Despite what Freeserve say, Windows, their CD and Internet Explorer are not required.
Freeserve is a genuinely free ISP set up by Dixons.
The Freeserve documentation says that this should be achieved by each user logging on to the POP server with the userid prefixed by "name@" - for instance, if I was user "chef" at "kenny.freeserve.co.uk" I would log on to the POP server as "chef@kenny.freeserve.co.uk".

Freeserve Hype Can't Be Sustained - Technology News by TechWeb   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
"Freeserve has to start building a lot more around a basic service," said Chris Lewis, director at the Yankee Group Europe, who said he was generally skeptical about ISP share values.
Freeserve appeared to recognize this and had emphasized in its advertising how you can book holidays and the like on the portal, he said.
Freeserve faces fierce competition, particularly from AOL Europe, which was knocked off the No. 1 slot earlier this year by Freeserve and has subsequently had to bite the subscription bullet and launch its own free service.

Freeserve is full of contradictions and its long term prospects are difficult to call, for the astrologer as well as the analyst.
As a homey Cancerian with its Moon in grab-a-freebie Sagittarius, Freeserve has expanded rapidly in the domestic market and its recent troubles are less significant than they might seem, even though the share price might jitter from mid- November right through to early April.

CNN.com - Freeserve threatens to quit U.K. - Industry Standard
Freeserve charges that AOL Europe, one of its largest rivals, avoids paying the U.K. value-added tax, or VAT, on its services because it is a U.S.-based company.
Freeserve said it discovered the tax anomaly in a recent Merrill Lynch analyst report.
Freeserve contacted a law firm called Olswang, which determined that AOL has been able to skirt the tax thanks to a 1997 ruling by the customs and excise office.

The free UK ISP Freeserve is shortly to be floated at somewhere between £1.3 and £2.5 billion.

Freeserve have neatly filled a gap to become the UK's No. 1 ISP in a short time by taking the cost out of connecting, and using retail outlets to reach the population, neatly usurping AOL in the process.

And, although Freeserve is still the UK's biggest ISP, back at the drawing board, plans are afoot to drop the reminder of those carefree, charge-free days.
Freeserve, now owned by French company Wanadoo, looks set to disappear as a brand, as the Frenchies consider adopting the Wanadoo label instead.

Freeserve Calls the Taxman on AOL
Since Merrill Lynch noted the discrepancy in a report issued Monday, Freeserve has been telling reporters the tax discrepancy saves AOL $43 million a year, which is hardly chump change (except maybe to AOL).
Freeserve probably backs Merrill Lynch's comment that the tax discrepancy means "other ISPs' gross margins and price competitiveness are at a disadvantage relative to AOL's." But AOL hasn't been paying the VAT since it opened shop in the UK in 1996.
The Financial Times quoted an executive of a competing ISP as saying he was "staggered" that Freeserve claims to have not known of AOL's exemption until the Merrill Lynch report.
