In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county is $31,283, and the median income for a family is $39,586.

It is bounded on the north by Limestone and Freestone counties, on the east by Anderson and Houston counties, on the south by Madison County, and on the west by Robertson County.
Centerville, the county seat, is near the geographical center of the county at 31°15 north latitude and 96°00' west longitude.
Although Leon County residents made only a small material contribution to the war effort, they were forced to deal with the lack of markets and dizzying fluctuations in the value of Confederate currency, as well as concern for their relatives and friends on the battlefield.

All of this territory, with its adjoining counties, was known in 1836 as the Robertson Land District.
At this time Freestone County was part of the Indian country, and with its buffalo and wild game of all kinds, formed a typical background for the pioneers who came to its forests and prairies of waving grass.
Freestone County was officially organized; Fairfield was located, and by the vote of the people was chosen the County Seat, and town lots were sold out.

Illegal whiskey known as Freestone County Bourbon Deluxe was transported out of the county by car, boat, truck, and plane and helped offset the downturn in the economy; according to one source, a number of local families "became wealthy, directly or indirectly," from the liquor trade.

It is the pride of ownership that makes Freestone Credit Union strong, because every account holder is an owner and entitled to have their voice and vote heard each year at our Annual Meeting.
On January 29, 1969 the credit union amended its field of membership to include the residents of Freestone County.  At that time the name was changed to Freestone Credit Union and the first full time paid manager was hired in December.
Freestone Credit Union is governed by a seven member board of Directors who serve staggered three year terms.  Each year the credit union has a meeting of the members to discuss the operations of the credit union, hear reports of the years operations, and select new directors.

The Lawrence County Historical Commission, under the auspices of President Dr. Robert H. Rhyne, Jr., Board Chairman Ray Campbell, and Committee Chairman Hoyt Cagle erected a historical marker which notes the presence of Leroy Pope Walker in Lawrence County.
Leroy Pope Walker was born 7 Feb 1817 in Madison County, Alabama, son of John W. Walker (1784-1823).
He represented his county in the State Legislature, then holding its sessions at Knoxville, and was at one time President of the State Senate.

Along with the fact that it is housed in the 110 year-old jail building, the museum also features 4 historical markers on the grounds and two original log cabins dating back to the mid- 1800's.
The marker was officially unveiled and the museum formally dedicated and opened to the public on afternoon, May 7, 1967.
