The Town of Freetown is a pastoral community in Bristol County with a small summer colony and a maritime history.
One of the state's first trout hatcheries was established in Freetown, and in the 1870's railroad dining cars and the luxurious dining rooms of ocean liners were serving Freetown trout.
Freetown's position at the head of a tidewater made it the closest port to the iron-producing towns of Middleborough and Lakeville, encouraging iron foundries and nails works as well as shipyards.

On March 6, 1971 at the annual town meeting Article 25: "To approve to form a group of seven persons to become The Council on Aging" was submitted and approved by the Selectmen of the town of Freetown namely: Mariano Rezendes, Jr., Milton A. DeMoranville and Frederick C. Boehler.
Seven persons from the town (three from East Freetown and three from Assonet and a chairman) were selected to form the Freetown Council on Aging.

Selectman Evans sold the mountain to the State of Massachusetts around 40 years ago to be used as a state park tourist attraction.

 Gurney Road Bridge Restoration Project
The Freetown Board of Selectmen, in conjunction with the Freetown Historical Commission, is interested in restoring a nineteenth century culvert located on Gurney Road in East Freetown, Massachusetts.
The culvert is the only culvert in East Freetown that remains from the Town-wide building effort undertaken between 1820 to 1824, and it is understood that the heavy masonry construction was required to carry the loads of iron "pigs" carted by oxen over Fall Brook to supply the Providence Foundry Company furnace.
This bridge is a critical visual link to the industrial development of East Freetown and merits preservation as a rare surviving example of Freetown's early industrial past.
