Linux.com | Set up a Freevo media center
Freevo is like a window manager -- an interface controlled by a remote control or the keyboard -- that provides access to various media.
Freevo uses MEncoder for recording TV, and it can use TV guides in XML format, which can be downloaded off the Net using XMLTV or similar programs.
Freevo does not require an X server and can also run on a frame-buffer device -- with video cards from vendors such as Matrox -- so getting the geometry right is essential.

LinuxDevCenter.com -- Freevo: Freedom For Your TV
Freevo is a media platform that brings together various applications for video recording and playback.
Because Freevo itself is not a video player, it has been difficult for its developers to implement time-shifting of live TV (which allows the couch potato to pause and rewind through a television program as it is being broadcast).
Freevo tends to be a more nimble program, or I should say "platform." This has to do with us not using a data server like MySQL or depending on Apache for the web interface.

Freevo supports both the Linux frame buffer and running in XFree86, while MythTV only runs under X. While getting Freevo to display full-screen on my TV with the frame buffer was rather simple, getting X to display in full-screen was difficult.
