Freeway II (1999) - RUTHLESS REVIEWS: Movies
Freeway II is significantly more daring than its predecessor and, as with certain John Waters films, the sheer audacity of Freeway II can be fun (and difficult) to watch.
Shock added to a decent film has a much greater impact than a film based on shock because the shock is not a crutch; the film doesnt have to be shocking so its more shocking when it is shocking.
Freeway II is a limited film, but the limitations of the film give it an enjoyable, B-movie feel and give it the freedom to plummet to new depths.

The movie is a dark comedy loosely modeled after the story of Little Red Riding Hood; Witherspoon is Red Riding Hood, while Sutherland plays the Big Bad Wolf.
The scenes that take place on the northbound I-5 freeway actually were filmed on the I-5.

The space of the film is a public one; an intersection of streets in a poor neighbourhood, dominated by the overhead freeway of the title.
Under the freeway life proceeds at a different pace - in its examination of the cityscape the film offers space and time to observe city life, one's sense of closeness to, or distance from the reality represented controlled in part by the coming and going of the sound.
It is tempting to see, in the pace of the shots and the pace of the actions filmed, a critique of both life in the world of the freeway, and of its customary film or television representation.

The group of researchers who argue that the Zapruder film is a fake have become known as the "alterationists." At the time that they were proposing their theories of the alteration of the Zapruder film, I had what none of them had.
The alterationists claimed that the Zapruder film motorcade sequence was the only film in the world which exhibited that phenomenon, so therefore this must have been a defect created in the Super Top Secret CIA photo lab where the CIA supposedly altered the film.
A couple of them were filmed under similar conditions, such as maximum telephoto, dark areas and grass in the background, and bright objects in the foreground.

Though the film was a box office hit and gained her attention to the Hollywood A-List, as a fan, I found myself uncomfortable with the attention she’s receiving and seeing her in such mainstream magazines as “Entertainment Weekly” and “US” magazine.
“Freeway” is a modern remake of the children’s story “Little Red Riding Hood” but with a 90s dark twist that is reminiscent to the Oliver Stone flick “Natural Born Killers” and the independent films of Quentin Tarantino.
The story for “Freeway” is set in a Southern California redneck type-of-place where a young illiterate girl named Vanessa Lutz (Witherspoon) who is also a potty-mouth finds her mother Ramona (Amanda Plummer) prostituting herself again in order to score drugs for herself and husband Larry (Michael T. Weiss).

 FREEWAY
After her mother and stepfather are arrested, Vanessa Lutz (an incredibly over-the-top Reese Witherspoon), tired of the system that she knows so well and not wanting to enter another foster home, steals a car and it’s over the freeway and through the penal system, to grandmother’s house we go.
If this sounds twisted and sick, that’s because it is. And it’s also hysterically funny because of the attitude the film takes (and I am a firm believer in the theory that anything can be funny if it is displayed in the right tone or attitude).
It beings with a little light comedy as Vanessa is in school and struggles for two or three minutes to read the sentence “The cat drinks milk.” As the film progresses, the humor becomes darker and darker until it reaches one of the most perversely funny endings I have ever seen.

AFT - Higher Ed Department - More News - 2003 - Film Captures Adjunct Plight
Janakos, a community college English professor in Santa Monica, was moved by the lack of respect, compensation and rights that California part-timers have, and she decided to self-finance the documentary to inform the public.
Their "offices" often are either vehicles or common mailrooms; they receive the summons to teach on the first day of some classes, and most adjuncts willingly accept the work--teaching at three, four, or even five colleges simultaneously to maintain a living wage.
The state chancellor and community college presidents are shown in the film explaining how they understand the plight of adjuncts but just don't have the funding to compensate the part-timers.

The police are desperate to catch the freeway terror before he kills anybody else on the air, Sunny starts an investigation of her own that attracts unwanted attention and a mysterious stranger named Frank Quinn (James Russo, “Deep Core”) has made it his mission in life to bring the killer down.
While “Freeway” isn’t the worst film ever made, it does tend to play more like a TV movie-of-the-week than a theatrical release.
In any case, the film does tend to show its age a bit with some grain, flecks and specs, but it’s not horrible by any means.

 At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Freeway (1996)
The film is seedy and profane, but it's not gratuitous -- these characters are the lowest of the low, and their speech and manner seem natural.
For the first half, I was taking the film on its own twisted terms, and, while not exactly liking it, admiring its skillful execution and morbid sense of humor.
Many critics are fooled into praising Freeway because of the skill with which its purpose is fulfilled.

FILM REVIEW -- `Freeway's' Wild, Funny Ride
The movie seduces with its humor, all the while presenting a realized vision of a harsh, absurd world: Moms are crack addicts, dads molest their daughters and the friendly stranger who picks up the distressed motorist is actually a psychotic killer.
The picture's executive producer is Oliver Stone, a fact that invites comparisons between ``Freeway'' and Stone's ``Natural Born Killers.'' Both involve cars going down the road and contain distressing scenes of violence.
``Freeway'' suggests that the only thing that's a fairy tale is the suggestion that such stories are fairy tales.

City officials have been working with the film crew to ensure lighting and noise does not disturb residents living in the area.
Crews are using a portion of the paved freeway near the Towne Avenue bridge to film a scene where, according to city spokesman Michael Maxfield, time has stopped.
Because the freeway is not being used, vehicles can be parked on the 210 extension for the purpose of the scene; otherwise, the production company would have to shut down a working freeway.

Since then, film adaptations of dark fairy tales have always appealed on some level; many have even be super.
Witherspoon plays the role with the same innane cheerfulness that she uses in 'Legally Blonde', which given she is meant to be an abused killer (admittedly in self-defense) is a little bit confusing.
While the whole white trash act gets a little overdone towards the end, with even her dreams of her grandmother's santuary being of a gaudy trailor decorated by inflatable animals and clowns, the film was generally enjoyable.

This scene instantly told your normally-open-minded reviewer that the usual Jewish suspects made this film; and, since it was written and directed by a man with the Jewish-sounding surname of Bright, and was produced by a subsidiary of Jewish mogul Aaron Spelling, it seems his instincts were correct.
A jailhouse lesbian scene involving Witherspoon and a really weird girl is also thrown into the film for no apparent reason other than to turn on the producers; equally telling is the scene in which Witherspoon struggles to secret a shiv in her anatomy.
The film's so rife with vulgarity you can almost hear the producers musing: "you know, we could have Reese say 'pecker' one more time, right about here, and then, we could insert another jailhouse, lesbian make-out scene here, 'cause Reese didn't really go far enough in that first lesbian scene....and then......."
