 truing/aligning bicycle wheel
Originally, wheels were radial spoked, that is the spokes ran straight from the rim to the nearest part of the hub, but Starley discovered that tangential spokes (the spokes run at an angle to a part of the hub which faces another part of the rim) were much stronger, especially for the driving wheel.
On the front wheel (and some rear wheels), the spokes are the same length on both sides, but on most derailleur bikes, the spokes on the freewheel side are shorter and tighter to help center the wheel on the axle (they would otherwise be off-centered due to the space taken by the freewheel).
Sometimes the wheel may need major adjustments, but you are on a bike trip and just need to get home (or to the next stop first), but more often the wheel is basically OK but a wobble needs to disappear or a spoke needs to be tightened.

While the single gear ratio will not be the "perfect" gear ratio for all conditions, in the conditions which fit the single gear, it is considerably more efficient mechanically than the drive train of a derailer bike.

These bicycles offer a choice of gear ratios, or speeds, that result from the interaction of the bicycle chain with one to three front chain rings and a cluster of five to nine cogs of various sizes that are mounted on the freewheel or cassette mechanism of the rear wheel.
Bicycle design was sidetracked in the 1870s as manufacturers pursued the notion that larger wheels made for faster bicycles, since each rotation of the pedal caused a larger-diameter wheel to roll farther than it would a smaller-diameter wheel (thus giving rise to the custom, still observed by expert cyclists, of specifying bicycle gears in gear-inches).

Shimano Cassettes & Freehubs, by Sheldon Brown
To dismantle a Uniglide cassette, turn the smallest sprocket counterclockwise with a chain whip, while holding the cluster from turning backwards with another chain whip, or with the chain of the bicycle.
Traditional rear hubs came with a standardized set of threads to which a standard freewheel/sprocket cluster could be screwed on.
Cassettes come in various gear ranges, and the ones where the sizes are close together, with no really large sprockets are commonly referred to in marketing-speak as "road" cassettes.
