Freezing Rain Climatology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A freezing rain climatology of this magnitude is unprecedented and will serve as a foundation for local and national forecasting centers, particularly the Storm Prediction Center, to better understand regional and temporal susceptibility to freezing rain.
Relative to all types of winter (freezing and frozen) precipitation, the percentages of freezing rain appear to be highest in the Southeast from North Carolina to Louisiana.
Stratification of all freezing rain observations by intensity reveals that 99 percent are light, one percent are moderate and none are heavy.

A Climatology of Freezing Rain in the Great Lakes Region   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
During freezing rain events, the mean sea-level pressure near the center of the high pressure center over the eastern part of the domain is higher than during non-events, while the pressure magnitude near the centers of the surface cyclones are similar (not shown).
Given the existence of strong warm advection during freezing rain and the importance of upward vertical motion in generating precipitation, it is of interest to diagnose the processes that force quasigeostrophic adiabatic ascent (e.g., Bluestein 1992): positive differential vorticity advection and warm advection.
There is large spatial and temporal variability in the annual frequency of freezing rain, with a general increase in frequency from west to east that appears related to the climatological track of surface cyclones, the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean to these parts of the lakes, and the presence of numerous valleys.

 Freezing rain 23/24 January 1996
This event was untypical of the usual freezing rain events experienced over the British Isles, particularly in its persistence and spatial extent across central England and Wales, and was probably comparable with other notable freezing rain events over southern Britain such as those of late January 1940, late January/early February 1986 and January 1987.
In most British cases freezing rain will give way to rain or snow as the weather system approaches, with only a narrow zone tending to be affected by freezing rain at any one time.
More prolonged freezing rain and ice pellet events are far less common both in this country, and around north-western Europe in general, but may cause extensive damage, to trees and overhead cables for example, and accidents when and where they do occur.

 Freezing rain
Freezing rain is a form of precipitation composed of rain that turns to ice on contact with the ground.
It typically occurs when the ground is cold but the air is warm enough for rain.
When significant amounts of ice accumulates, the ice storm can be dangerous.

Research of Freezing Rain and Winter Storms
Freezing rain, winter storms and aircraft icing to be studied in major research project in the Ottawa/Montreal area
Aircraft icing, which can occur when airplanes encounter freezing rain either on the ground or in flight, is a serious safety hazard.
In earlier studies of aircraft icing, it was assumed that freezing rain and drizzle affected airplanes on or near the ground, and that icing aloft was caused by minute liquid cloud droplets, which froze upon contact with the leading edges of the plane.

Weather Elements: Hard Rains Will Fall
Rain and snow, you see, are not the only members of the winter precipitation congregation, just the most common.
Temperatures and rates of fall determine whether freezing rain/drizzle is comprised of glaze ice or rime ice.
Freezing rain/drizzle, snow grains and ice crystals usually fall as steady precipitation whereas showers are the dominant method of fall for graupel -- snow pellets and soft hail.

Precipitation: 1) The process where water vapor condenses in the atmosphere to form water droplets that fall to the Earth as rain, sleet, snow, hail, etc. 2) As used in hydrology, precipitation is the discharge of water, in a liquid or solid state, out of the atmosphere, generally onto a land or water surface.
Rain (RA): Precipitation, either in the form of drops larger than 0.02 inch (0.5 mm), or smaller drops, which in contrast to drizzle, are widely separated.
Rain seemingly falls in sheets; individual drops are not identifiable; heavy spray to the height of several inches is observed over hard surfaces.

The Weather Notebook: Listener Question: Hail, Sleet And Freezing Rain   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Rain forms up where it's warm and falls into the cold air, freezing into little pieces, what we call sleet, on the way down.
Finally freezing rain is almost like sleet except it freezes after it hits the ground forming a glaze of ice.
So hail falls from summer thunderstorms and each stone can be as big as a pea, a quarter, or a grapefruit, sleet and freezing rain fall in the winter, sleet being ice pellets and freezing rain being rain that freezes whe it hits the ground.

This algorithm protects the ASOS from falsely reporting wet snow as freezing rain, but results in the loss of 2.3% of true freezing rain minutes when the freezing rain is mixed with snow.
A measure of ASOS's ability to detect freezing rain is provided by the number of minutes in which both ASOS and an observer reported freezing rain.
Researchers found that, of the 12,234 minutes of freezing rain reported by the ASOS, 9771 minutes (80%) were confirmed by an observer as having either freezing rain or freezing drizzle in progress.

Freezing rain is rain which falls onto a surface which has a temperature below freezing.
The rain then freezes when it hits the surface, such as a road, because the temperature of the surface is less than 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
This is very dangerous because the freezing rain forms a coating of ice on the surface it hits.

Definition: Rain that falls through a shallow layer of freezing temperatures at the surface and freezes upon impact to form a coating of glaze upon the ground and on exposed objects (e.g., pine trees).
The shallow freezing layer was from the surface to 3,000 feet with the coolest temperature at 2,100 feet at around 23 degrees Fahrenheit.
Further north, across the Red River Valley of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and southwest Arkansas, the freezing layer at the surface was larger (more depth) so the liquid droplets had time to freeze into sleet.

Rain (see above) that falls in liquid form but freezes upon impact to form a coating of glaze on the ground and exposed objects.
Freezing rain frequently occurs as a transient condition between the occurrence of rain and ice pellets (sleet) as cold air advection and the deepening of the cold air layer occurs.
They form from the freezing of rain droplets or refreezing of largely melted snowflakes when falling through a fairly significant below-freezing layer of air at or near the earth's surface.
