His grief at the death in 1797 of Sophie von Kühn, to whom he had become betrothed in Tennstedt, found expression in the beautiful Hymnen an die Nacht (first published in the Athenäum, 1800).
A few months later he entered the Mining Academy of Freiberg in Saxony to study geology under Professor Abraham Gottlob Werner (1750-1817), whom he immortalized as the "Meister" in the fragment Die Lehrlinge zu Sais.
Here he again became engaged to be married, and the next two years proved fruitful in poetic output.

He attended the naval academy of Portsmouth and entered the navy in 1822 and became a lieutenant in 1829 and commander in 1833.

He was elected president of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in 1858, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1860.

In spite of all of this, the fact remains that grey literature is still difficult to identify, process, and control bibliographically.
Even though the Internet seems to have made strides in access for the end user, the truth remains that it is through the librarian's knowledge of grey literature resources and their ability to mine for hidden treasures that provides the most reliable access to these documents for researchers.
The author was Bibliotheksrat at the Scientific Information Centre of the Mining Academy Freiberg, GDR, at time of writing.
