At Freiburg Master Joseph practised from 1356 to 1370, settling in the latter year at Basel, where he was appointed municipal physician at a yearly salary of 25 pounds.
Master Simon, a French Jew, was living at Freiburg in 1402, and Ackin of Vesoul, who was famous for his skill as a physician and surgeon, resided there from 1412 to 1423, when he was called to Bern, where Jewish physicians had been living at even an earlier date.
The Jews of Switzerland, being almost exclusively engaged in money-lending, were tolerated because of their wealth and were persecuted for the same reason.

Michel Plancherel's father, Donat Plancherel, was born in 1863 in Bussy, a village in the district de la Broye in the Kanton Fribourg, close to Estavayer-le-Lac.
Michel Plancherel was president of the Swiss Mathematical Society between 1918 and 1919, vice-president of the International Congress of Mathematicians 1932 in Zürich, and president and co-founder of the foundation for the advancement of the mathematical sciences in Switzerland and served in several other institutions.

It is a two hour trip via high-speed train from Frankfurt to Freiburg.
Basel, Switzerland is only 40km away, a short train ride.

We thought a train ride through Germany’s Black Forest would be a nice way to enter Switzerland and got off the train in the small town of Freiberg.
Surrounding the cathedral there was a lovely outdoor market with fresh produce, cheese, eggs, meat, bread and colorful mushrooms but the cold weather and rain prompted our somewhat hasty retreat to the train.
However, on the train ride out of Switzerland we had the unique experience of seeing an avalanche, safely behind the receding train (I think it’s the most excited I have ever seen Adrian).

As the intercity train zipped between Zurich and Geneva, I caught a glimpse of the medieval town of Freiburg nestled in a deep wooded valley spanned by an enormous bridge.
On arrival at the tourist office which is near the train station, I discovered that the city of Freiburg is capital of the canton of the same name and sits on the border between Switzerland’s French and German-speaking regions.
