The tunnel is 13 kilometers (8 miles) long.
It is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes between France and Italy being used for 80% of the commercial roadway traffic.

The Frejus tunnel was opened to road traffic in 1980 but has come under increasing strain in recent years due to the growing amount of trans-Alpine traffic.
