The Fremantle-class patrol boats have been the Royal Australian Navy's coastal patrol vessels since 1979.

Royal Australian Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The manpower of the fleet stood at four hundred officers and men and, for the next two years, ships were built for the fledgling navy.
Majestic, although the name ship of the class, was not as near completion at the end of the war as Terrible and the RAN decided to have her construction completed with the latest Royal Navy carrier innovations of the time - the angled flight deck and a mirror landing aid.
The RAN today is one of the most modern in the Pacific, tasked with the ability to defend the home waters, and undertake operations in farout locations.

Senator Hill said the patrol boats will be able to operate in rougher seas and would improve the navy's ability to apprehend vessels suspected of illegal fishing and quarantine, customs and immigration offences.
The project is to acquire a fleet of patrol boats to replace the RAN's existing 15-strong fleet of 42-metre, 220-tonne Fremantle-class patrol boats (FCPBs).
Being some 14.8m longer than the Fremantles, and fitted with an active ride control system including fin stabilisers and trim tabs, the new patrol boats will be able to operate in a greater range of sea conditions, further improving their use at sea.

The new boats will be able to operate in a greater range of sea conditions and will improve Navy’s capability to intercept and apprehend vessels suspected of illegal fisheries, quarantine, customs or immigration offences.
The Armidale Class Patrol Boats will be multi-crewed (more crews than boats) using a squadron concept (where a number of crews rotate across a smaller number of boats) resulting in benefits from overall higher usage of the boats and a more coherent training and respite regime for Navy personnel.
The Armidale Class Patrol Boats also have greater cabin and recreation space that will allow crew to perform at their optimum while at sea.

Letter: New patrol boats - 1 December 2001
Quite apart from their lack of any useful war fighting capability, Australia’s 15 Fremantle Class patrol boats are severely limited by their size, their lack of range and their lack of a helicopter for reconnaissance.
What makes the problem of Australia’s patrol boat fleet even worse is that the Federal Government recently issued tenders for their replacement, with a set of specifications that effectively eliminates the most suitable types of vessel from being tendered.
What Australia desperately needs to perform the tasks of patrolling its sea borders and exclusive economic zone is not a new Coastguard bureaucracy but a high speed, long range patrol boat which is larger than the Fremantle Class yet smaller and considerably less expensive than a half billion-dollar FFG frigate.

The Fremantle Class Patrol Boat is powered by MTU diesels that are rated at 30 knots but anyone that has worked on or with the Australian boats knows that they regularly exceed 40 knots when in pursuit of 'illegals'.
The Navy Patrol Boat fleet had become expert at making it as difficult as possible in fishing Australian waters by boarding the trawlers, seizing their catch and 'escorting' the fishing boats back to Darwin where the captains and owners are prosecuted in court.
Fortunately the Vietnamese boat people that arrived during the mid 70's assimilated extremely well into Darwin's multicultural society and the elements responsible for the spate of kidnappings in NSW have been expelled and kept out of the community.
