The bridge was open on November 11, 1973 at a final cost of $82 million, most of which was financed by the Federal Highway Administration.
The bridge is 2,152 ft. in total length with a main span of 1,255 ft. The top of the arch is 381 ft. tall and the main span has 175 ft. of vertical clearance.
The Fremont Bridge was also the 26th Peregrine falcon nest site designated in Oregon after the raptor was placed on the U.S. Threatened and Endangered Species list in 1970.

The Fremont Bridge is a double-leaf bascule bridge that connects Fremont and 4th Avenues N. 30 feet over Seattle's Fremont Cut between Fremont and Queen Anne.
One of the busiest bascule bridges in the world, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation, the Fremont Bridge opens an average of 35 times a day.
The Fremont Bridge was actually first opened soon after midnight on Friday June 15, 1917, first to "owl cars" - the last run of the trolley's '- and then after 5am the same day to pedestrians and all other traffic.

The Aurora Bridge (George Washington Memorial Bridge) carries Aurora Avenue (Washington State Route 99) over the Ship Canal to the top of Queen Anne Hill, and the Fremont Bridge carries Fremont Avenue over the canal to the hill's base.
In addition to Lenin is the Fremont Troll, an 18-foot tall concrete sculpture of a troll crushing a Volkswagen Beetle in its left hand, created in 1990 and situated under the north end of the Aurora Bridge.

Among workers residing in the cluster of 17 census tracts north of the Ship Canal and in the immediate vicinity of the Fremont Bridge, 1655 of them are bicycle commuters (journey-to-work mode on April 1, 2000, US Census).
Bicycle commuters are especially concentrated near the bridge itself.

Fremont is a district of Seattle that is self-declared "The Center of the Universe." It's North of downtown and begins just West of the Aurora Bridge (99) and ends at the waters of the ship canal.
Although the Fremont bridge is much smaller than the large, looming Aurora bridge, it's much more quaint.
Being underneath the massive 99 bridge is actually kinda cozy and it's a surprisingly fun area to hang out at and spend some time with the troll.
