This is the glorious southernmost tip of France, bordered by the departement of the Aude (11) to the north, by the Mediterranean to the east, by Spanish Catalonia to the south and by the principality of Andorra to the west.
French Catalonia was put on the map in 1276 when Perpignan became the capital of the Kings of Majorca, under James I. Roussillon remained under Spanish control until Louis XI came along in 1463 and conquered the capital making it French.

Perpignan (French: Perpignan; Catalan Perpinyà) is a commune and the préfecture (administrative capital city) of the Pyrénées-Orientales département in southern France.
Perpignan was the capital of the former province and county of Roussillon (French Catalonia or Northern Catalonia).
François Arago (1786-1853), the physicist, astronomer and liberal politician, who secured the abolition of slavery in the French colonies in 1853, was born in the nearby village of Estagel and is memorialized in the eponymous Place Arago that bears his statue in the centre of the town.

I was Judge Dredd at this organic wine competition held in rather-hot-June at the AIVBLR's HQ (Languedoc-Roussillon organic growers' association, with the very French 'interprofession' word in it), who also organise Millésime Bio trade show where the medal winners are officially honoured.
Apart from my pick of the ones I tasted - blind of course, their identity was revealed afterwards - I've also included notes and scores for all the gold-decorated wines and candid comments on the judging process and results.
