French colonial empires - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early French attempts to found colonies in Brazil, in 1555 at Rio de Janeiro (the so-called France Antarctique) and in 1612 at São Luís (the so-called France Équinoxiale), and in Florida were unsuccessful, due to Portuguese and Spanish vigilance and prevention.
Some recovery of the French colonial empire was made during the French intervention in the American Revolution, with Saint Lucia being returned to France by the Treaty of Paris in 1783, but not nearly as much as had been hoped for at the time of French intervention.
The French colonial empire began to fall apart during the Second World War, when various parts of their empire were occupied by foreign powers (Japan in Indochina, Britain in Syria and Lebanon, the US and Britain in Morocco and Algeria, and Germany in Tunisia).

French Community, established in 1958 by the constitution of the Fifth French Republic to replace the French Union.
The member states were self-governing but were represented through the institutions of the Community in matters of common interest: foreign policy, defense, economic and financial policy, policy on strategic raw materials, supervision of courts, higher education, and communications.
However, as the former French African possessions evolved their own political and economic structures, the French Community became largely defunct, although it was not formally abolished.

National French Week - Community Events - Cinema
Thus, because of the reputation of French and French language films, we can capitalize on the public's readiness to be both entertained and enlightened by the literary masterpieces, the clever comedies, and the gripping dramas found in these films.
An excellent way to celebrate National French Week would be to combine a community activity that would appeal to a general population or to a group of special populations with a showing of a French film.
Using films to attract attention to French is usually successful because films are enjoyable entertainment, because those not well acquainted with French culture are curious about it, and because those who are acquainted with French culture are usually delighted to have an opportunity to enjoy it vicariously through film.

French La Communauté, association of states created in 1958 by the constitution of the Fifth French Republic to replace the French Union (itself the successor of the former French colonial empire) in dealing with matters of foreign policy, defense, currency and economic policy, and higher education.

The French constitution of 1958, creating the Fifth Republic, provided for the free association of autonomous republics within the newly created French Community, in which France was the senior partner.
The community had jurisdiction over foreign policy, defense, currency, common ethnic and financial policy, policy on strategic raw materials, and, unless specifically excluded by agreement, higher education, internal and external communications, and the courts.
The elite prudently recognized that although Côte d'Ivoire was the wealthiest French African territory, it lacked the financial resources and the trained work force to develop as rapidly as it could as a member of the community.
