French Kicks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
French Kicks is an indie rock group residing in New York City, USA.
The three friends then moved to Brooklyn, New York after college, where the French Kicks were formed with vocalist/guitarist Josh Wise, a Princeton grad who originally hailed from Huntsville, Alabama.
The French Kicks also appear on two compiliations: The My Pal God Holiday Record 2 with the song "Alabaster City", and This is Next Year: A Brooklyn Based Compiliation with the song "1985" (Alt Version).

French Kicks: Trial Of The Century (2004): Reviews
With this album, French Kicks have taken a sizeable leap forward, taking the right bits and pieces from half a century of rock 'n' roll to make something new and, yes, unique.
Trial is as rhythmically acerbic and propulsive as the last couple of French Kicks offerings, but the pace is a little slower and more deliberate, the songwriting more cohesive, reflective, and mature.
As for its place in the larger new rock movement, The Trial Of The Century's forward motion is on a par with The Walkmen's leap from the gray clang of its debut to the committed window-rattling of this year's Bows + Arrows.

 My Pal God Records
Formed in New York in the spring of 1998, the French Kicks attempt to strip down sound through angular motions ripe with rhythm and rooted in melody.
Their songs are set apart by the vocal interplay between 3/4 of the band, who split up the lead vocal duties and at times share the center-mic with nontraditional vocal blends.
The French Kicks' first recording, a four song Cd5, was released on October 4th, 1999.

 French Kicks - Free Music Downloads - MP3 Downloads - Download.com Music
French Kicks can not be accused of musical laziness.
For this band experimentation and self-discovery are the whole game, and the results of their continued explorations have set them in a category all their own, and earned them a dedicated audience.
From the time they began as a raucous four piece with a singing drummer, to the more refined, intricate and subtle experimental pop band they are today, French Kicks have taken that experimentation always further, consistently trying to surprise and surpass themselves with each new chapter.

There's an inherent ingenuity about the French Kicks' 2002 breakthrough One Time Bells, a trait that shone brightly amidst the slew of bands participating in the perceived next wave of new millennium rock and roll.
While many of their peers from the recent rock resurgence clutch tightly to whatever sound made them famous, the French Kicks use evolution as a solution on The Trial of the Century, opting for uncharted realms over regurgitation.
Booked for a Wednesday night residency throughout the month of February at NYC's Mercury Lounge, the French Kicks debuted new material from The Trial of the Century for adoring packed houses, and also showed off a new stage arrangement that featured Nick Stumpf emerging from behind the drum kit as a full-on frontman.

Like the Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser, French Kicks frontman Nick Stumpf often falls in love with his own croon, deflating songs and blowing potential melodies in the process.
This time the Kicks pick up on one of the Walkmen's greatest tricks-- the use of pretty chord changes as hooks.
For all the improved minutiae, French Kicks simply can't shed the "boring" tag.

As former labelmates the Walkmen were able to out grow retro garage rock and grow their sound into something fuller and more realized, the Kicks seem to be spreading their own wings.
The French Kicks may be sad, skinny rich boys trying to make it in a city full of happy, skinny rich boys, but they happen to be quite good at their craft.
The French Kicks have seemingly all been through a pretty rough break up sometime recently, as the mood recalls Beck's lovelorn Sea Change or the Postal Service's Give Up.

The mature songwriting, sophisticated arrangements, and coherency of sound and aesthetic wooed critics and granted the band an audience who, finally, loved the French Kicks for the music they made--rather than the subgenre or scene they were never really a part of.
Reuniting with Trial of the Century producer Doug Boehm, the French Kicks sought to bring a stable hand to a band whose experimental nature and perfectionism can lead to a stressful studio environment.

The French Kicks: The Trial of the Century - The Boston Globe
The French Kicks may be in the frontlines of New York City's new rock revolution, but their shiny indie-pop is far from the edgy post-punk and organic garage-rock that has defined their hometown's sound.
And while it lacks the moments of melodic perfection that leapt from their last album, and their subtler sound has a more glossy sheen, the band still has a knack for fresh sonic textures.

French Kicks: Two Thousand - PopMatters Music Review
A New York City indie rock quartet, the Kicks are the easiest-to-ignore band from a whole generation of local groups that all landed recording contracts right around the same time, including Interpol, the Walkmen, Liars, and, of course, the aforementioned Strokes, kings of the scene.
French Kicks, though, their “thing” seems to be unobtrusive indie pop/rock.
French Kicks have become indie rock wallpaper, and Two Thousand, while perfectly enjoyable, is, all in all, just another sheet on the wall.

The French Kicks possess more talent than most of their contemporaries; that they take basic post-punk song structure and infuse the occasional confession, swath of shoegazing or Who-like wallop on the snare makes us (and them) healthier and happier for those actions of homage.
Most of the band hails from Washington DC, but they were more in line with NYC’s Strokes/Walkmen/Natural History than the DC breeding ground of Dismemberment Plan or the talented Ted Leo by the time of the at-times unsteady first longplayer.
From their early Jam-like smashings to their later toughened George Michaelisms, the French Kicks are handclapping their way across the musical universe.

Officially christened the French Kicks in 1998, the group released their self-titled debut EP on My Pal God the following year.
After more touring and recording, the French Kicks signed to Star Time in the U.S. and Creation impresario Alan McGee's label Poptones in the U.K. The Young Lawyer EP arrived in early 2001, and a year later the group toured with the Vue and labelmates the Walkmen before releasing their full-length debut, One Time Bells.
The following year, the band began writing songs for their third album, and early in 2006, the French Kicks reunited with Trial of the Century producer Doug Boehm in L.A. to record.

The French Kicks + Calla + Revival - PopMatters Concert Review
Mid way through the set I was able to calm down and realize that most of my major qualms with The French Kicks were not their fault but merely the residual anger I still felt over watching Calla's set.
The set tended to blend together, the songs felt somewhat similar and repetitive but of the three bands that night they were without a doubt the most accomplished showmen.
The French Kicks did not rely on a dour image to establish their identity and because of that they seemed far more natural than Calla.

Jagged (but not harsh) guitar riffs, solid drumming, and tasteful background vocals make the French Kicks hard to dislike; never do any of the songs on this EP drag.

 Oh My Rockness ((French Kicks))
From their jangly, garage/post-punk beginnings (akin to bands like Interpol and The Walkmen) to their more restrained pop-synth evolution (sounding closer to a modernized Tears for Fears), the French Kicks have consistently written seemingly effortless pop songs.
While some older fans may be disappointed that pure loudness isn't as pronounced in the Kicks's new hushed repertoire, they can still dust off the amps and crank it up on stage.

The label's consistent taste has pieced together a hearty roster touting the likes of Brendan Benson, The Natural History and The Joggers, not to mention Saturn car ad faves the Walkmen and, of course, the French Kicks.
The FK's were responsible for StarTime's first release two years ago with the band's sophomore EP, Young Lawyer, and they continue to define the label ethic with their inventive and increasingly popped-out groove rock.
Surprisingly, Stumpf says that nobody ever asks the band if they are French, but one thing they can't seem to avoid is the unwelcome and unwarranted stigma of being lumped in with the over-heralded NYC scene.

HYBRIDMAGAZINE.COM | REVIEWS | French Kicks - One Time Bells
With garage-y guitar hooks, “Crying Just for Show” features Nick Stumpf sounding slightly defeated as he wraps his voice around quasi-sensical lyrics like And you love all everybody here/ even when you want some all to disappear.
Airy keyboards, rolling drums, and the Kicks’ trademark vocal harmonies give “Where We Went Off” a mellow and introspective tone (Falling into your hands/ into my arms/ is where we went off/ is where we belong).
The Kicks exhibit impressive control on their music, spare on tracks like “One Time Bells” and gradually building in intensity on songs like “Wrong Side.”  The keyboard clangs, guitar grates, bass is gritty, and drums pop.  In its best moments, One Time Bells perfectly balances moody atmospherics and upbeat hooks.
