He was brevetted major for gallantry and, after service in California, resigned from the army, married, and made his home in New Jersey.
The military attracted him again in 1859, when he served in Napoleon III's Imperial Guard in the Italian War, winning the French Legion of Honor for bravery at Solferino.
He was buried in Trinity Churchyard in New York City but was later moved to the National Cemetery at Arlington, Va. The New Jersey town in which he had resided was renamed Kearny in his honor.

 Eugene Jacques Bullard
He joined the French Foreign legion in 1914 at the start of World War I, and became known as the “Black Swallow of Death.” Bullard then joined the French Flying Corps, where he became the first fl combat pilot on May 5, 1917.
Bullard attempted to join the U.S. military after the United States entered the war, but he was barred because of his race.
He served in the French Flying Corps for the remainder of the war, earning the French Legion of Honor, France's highest military honor, and becoming one of France's most decorated war heroes.
