French colonial empires - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early French attempts to found colonies in Brazil, in 1555 at Rio de Janeiro (the so-called France Antarctique) and in 1612 at São Luís (the so-called France Équinoxiale), and in Florida were unsuccessful, due to Portuguese and Spanish vigilance and prevention.
Some recovery of the French colonial empire was made during the French intervention in the American Revolution, with Saint Lucia being returned to France by the Treaty of Paris in 1783, but not nearly as much as had been hoped for at the time of French intervention.
The French colonial empire began to fall apart during the Second World War, when various parts of their empire were occupied by foreign powers (Japan in Indochina, Britain in Syria, Lebanon, and Madagascar, the US and Britain in Morocco and Algeria, and Germany in Tunisia).

Pacific Magazine: FRENCH TERRITORIES: Pacific Leaders To Attend France-Oceania Meeting In Paris
In a statement on Thursday, the government of French Polynesia has confirmed that in spite of earlier threats to boycott the Paris meeting, President Oscar Temaru will attend the meeting, which is likely to define France's policy in the Pacific region for at least the next three years.
Temaru's office also says the French Polynesian leader is also planning to hold talks with French Prime minister Dominique de Villepin, French minister for overseas territories François Baroin as well as minister for transport, tourism, sea and public utilities (and also a former French minister for overseas territories in the mid-1990s) Dominique Perben.
French Polynesia's legislative Assembly Speaker Philip Schyle also indicated earlier this week that he would travel to Paris to "respond to the invitation and represent French Polynesia … because it has its place in the French spectrum, as well as in the Pacific spectrum".

Pacific Magazine: FRENCH POLYNESIA: Drollet Threatens To Boycott France-Oceania Summit
These issues include delays in payments for French funds to the Pacific territory, as well as the imposition of an airport tax (labelled by French Polynesia's government as a "clear intrusion" in local affairs), despite the opposition of the local legislative assembly, which had voted twice and unanimously against the bill.
Another blow to the Paris-Pape'ete relations, Drollet (who is also minister for tourism) said, was the refusal from the French government to endorse the principle of a tourism-oriented bill that would have allowed Japanese tourists to legally marry in French Polynesia and therefore promoted the "honeymoon tourism" niche market.
French authorities say the proposed bill is currently not compatible with French common law, because for a wedding to be legal in French Polynesia, one has to have resided at least 30 days.
