French Renaissance is a recent term used to describe a cultural and artistic movement in France from the late 15th century to the early 17th century.
The French Renaissance traditionally extends from (roughly) the French invasion of Italy in 1494 during the reign of Charles VIII until the death of Henry IV in 1610.
French Renaissance literature is, for the purpose of this article, literature written in French (Middle French) from the French invasion of Italy in 1494 to 1600, or roughly the period from the reign of Charles VIII of France to the ascension of Henri IV of France to the throne.

The University of Virginia Library and the University of Virginia French Department are pleased to announce an expansion of the Renaissance in Print (Gordon Project), made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and continued support from the Florence Gould Foundation.
The collection, which came to the University of Virginia in 1986, was the bequest of the late Douglas Huntly Gordon of Baltimore, a prominent Maryland attorney, former president of St. John’s College in Annapolis, and recipient of the French Légion d'Honneur and Palmes Académiques.
Digital facsimiles of the books themselves will be of immediate use to scholars for research in such fields as material bibliography, history of the book arts, French Renaissance literature, history, philosophy, religion and art history.
