On 2005-01-03, administration of the Îles Éparses was transferred from Reunion to French Southern Territories.
Because of the Antarctic treaty, I have assigned Adélie Land to Antarctica for purposes of classification.
French Southern Territories is divided into four districts and one private domain of the state.

On January 1, 1996 the French Southern and Antarctic Territories issued a stamp commemorating the micrometeorites of Cape Prud'homme, Antarctica.

The French Southern and Antarctic Territories (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises), an overseas territory of France, have a total area of 7,781 sq km (3,004 sq mi), not including Adélie Land, and are administered by an appointed administrator and consultative council from Paris.
Most of the population (145 in 2002) in the territories were researchers.

The Crozets form one of the four regions in the Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), which include Terre Adélie (Antarctica), Kerguelen and the islands of Amsterdam/St-Paul.

In the belief that a massive southern continent must exist to "balance" those of the northern hemisphere, King Louis XV of France commissioned the French navigator, Chevalier Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec, to discover such a continent for France.
During the political upheaval of the French Revolution, Kerguelen was perceived to be a "victim of the monarchy", and was released.
The base is shared with CNES (the French National Space Center), whose operations are dedicated to the tracking of satellites — notably the Ariane rockets launched from Kourou in French Guiana.
