French polishing is the name given to the process.
Any ridges or tears of polish are no great problem as they can be dealt with later, but they indicate too much polish in the rubber or too much pressure on the job.
Too much and it will be difficult to absorb without the use of methylated spirit added to the rubber which can be tricky for the amateur polisher.

She was won over by his deft unpacking of a suitcase of ladies' underwear and he joined the cast along with another unknown actor, Jessica Tandy.
There were cries of "author, author" but, by the time French shoved a "green-faced and dithering" Rattigan on stage, the curtain was already descending; it landed unceremoniously on his head.

 Threepenny: Sante, French Without Tears
For me the French language very nearly became detached from its base, like so many of our household customs, which had lost their connection to any wider world and hovered in a vacuum, fetishes that might as well have been invented by my parents to keep me alienated from my peers.
French does not necessarily have fewer sounds than English, but the protocols governing their order and frequency make their appearances predictable-hence the profusion of sound-alike phrases and sentences, which fueled Surrealism and ensure the ongoing appeal of Freudian and post-Freudian ideas in the French-speaking world: Les dents, la bouche.
The romance of French among poetically inclined American youths has waned considerably, in part because of the very success of French theory and its particular brand of double dutch, the nuances of which sometimes require a profound knowledge of classic literature, although this is not always apparent to English speakers.

The organisers of the Sydney Olympic Games are not endearing themselves to that small but valiant band of French men and women whose daily struggle it is to prevent the allegedly ailing language of Molière from drowning in a tide of vulgar and inelegant English.
An outraged French press immediately surmised that this was to do with her origins in the home of the original Olympic Games - a wholesome and innocent sporting contest before a Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin got his hands on them.
This brought a stinging rebuke from the French foreign ministry, whose spokeswoman, the formidable Anne Gazeau-Secret (ever heard of a spokeswoman surnamed Secret?) declared forcefully that article 27 of chapter 2 of the Olympic charter stipulates that the official languages of the IOC are French and English, "in that order".

It constitutes a muted comment on the decadence of an upper-class 1930s milieu in which young men, usually of little brain, take themselves off to cram for the language paper of their Diplomatic Service exams in a comfortable French villa.
The whiff of misogyny in the air is at least partially counteracted by the presence of the good and true Jacqueline, but the focus has by now shifted decisively from the Diana-driven romance plot to the masculine camaraderie of the three fellows.
No-one would claim that French Without Tears makes greatly trenchant statements, but Luscombe succeeds in identifying and bringing out that additional undercurrent, just enough to redeem this from being an antiquated light comedy production for its own sake.

The period of preparation recommended for studying in France (choosing your programmes, corresponding with universities, applying to them, applying for local scholarships, getting documents and transcripts in order and translated) is 10 months but it could even take half the time, as in Khade’s case.
