The Iroquois fought the French throughout the establishment of the colony in Canada.
In time, as the French population and strength grew, the Iroquois drifted southward into upper New York State and the eastern Great Lakes basin, but their animosity toward the French continued to be manifested in raids and hit-and-run warfare.

Iroquois oral tradition, as recorded in the Jesuit Relations, speaks of a draining war between the Mohawk Iroquois and an alliance of the Susquehannocks and Algonquins sometime between 1580 and 1600.
Some historians have argued that the wars were accelerated by the growing scarcity of the beaver in the lands controlled by the Iroquois in the middle 17th century.
In January 1666, the French invaded the Iroquois homeland, led by the aristocrat Alexandre de Prouville the "Marquis de Tracy" and viceroy of New France.

 The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was a war by proxy initially, and was one of a chain of conflicts stretching back almost a century.
The failure of the French to establish colonies on the Atlantic seaboard south of the Saint Lawrence River, and their slow occupation of the Ohio River and Mississippi River valleys, allowed the English to ultimately gain control of the North American continent.
The war was triggered by the actions of the military force led by Washington in 1754, but had Washington not been in charge of the Virginia response to the French incursion then a war would have been triggered by some other incident in the 1750's.

The Huron/Iroquois war certainly ranks in there as a less well-known section of history, but as you'll see as this scenario unfolds, it may have had a very important impact in determining the direction of US and Canadian history from that point forward.
It was a war of annihilation, not of skirmishes.
A French colony in Texas could have helped those revolts succeed, which could in turn have peeled back layers of Spanish settlement in northern Mexico to the point where vital gold and silver producing areas were threatened.

On the positive side, the adoptions gave the Iroquois a claim to the lands of their former enemies beyond mere "right of conquest." Mass adoption, however, was not extended to non-Iroquian speaking tribes, and from this point the Iroquois population dropped.
An exception was the Iroquois threat of intervention on behalf of the Tuscarora during the Tuscarora War (1712-13) with the Carolina colonists.
At the Treaty of Lancaster with the Iroquois, Shawnee and Delaware (and indirectly - Mingo) in 1748, Pennsylvania urged the Iroquois to restore the Ohio tribes to the Covenant Chain as a barrier against the French.

Rightly called “Wars for Empire”, these conflicts were extensions of wars that had erupted on the European mainland or on the high seas over balance of power, expansionism, mercantilism, and Indian alliances.
The first of these conflicts was King William’s War (1689-1697) or the War of the League of Augsburg in Europe; Queen Anne’s War (1702-1711) or the War of the Spanish Succession; King George’s War (1744-1748) or the War of the Austrian Succession.
Unlike previous colonial wars, this one was fought with North American as the primary theater of operations and was France’s last-ditch effort to save her dwindling New World possessions from the English and her Native American allies.

 French Ontario in the 17th and 18th Centuries - War and Defense
The expansion of French trade and alliances during the 18th century would result in wars with some First Nations west and south of the Great Lakes, but their impact would be mostly limited to the interior.
French and British would fight two other wars, the War of Austrian Succession (1741-1748) and the Seven Years War (1756-1763), the latter resulting in France’s loss of its North American colonies.
The first forts, built between the 1660’s and the end of the century, were for the most part abandoned as a result of the Iroquois wars and French attempts to redirect trade towards Montreal.

The French and Iroquois Wars erupted between the Iroquois Confederation and the Algonquin, with their French allies, over control of the fur trade.
Soon after, Canada was a major front in the War of 1812 between the United States and British Empire and its successful defense had important long-term effects on Canada, including the building of a sense of unity and nationalism among the population of British North America.
The economy boomed during the war due in large part to the enormous amounts of military materiel being produced for Canada, Britain, China and the Soviet Union.

 Iroquois
The Iroquois had an agricultural economy, based mainly on corn, with supplementary crops of pumpkins, beans, and tobacco and later of orchard fruits such as apples and peaches.
They bitterly opposed the extension of French settlement southward from Canada, and they were responsible for preventing the English colonies from being flanked on the west by the French.
These wars are known as the Beaver Wars because the Iroquois wanted more land for hunting and trapping beaver and deer.
