The curve is placed on the drawing material, and a pencil, knife or other implement is traced around its curves to produced the desired result.
French curves are not used as much now days because of todays modern vector drawing computer programs.

There's no standard for french curve shapes, I had a set for drafting and my dad had a set that he used and both our sets were different.
My first job was selling stationery supplies, and french curves were a staple for calligraphers, as mentioned here.
The French curve was directly responsible for, and thoroughly supplanted by, the Bezier curve.

I haven't seen that much of French film since I have been in the UK, But back in the 80's and 90's I was a great fan of I. Adjani an love all the film she was in.
Many times, French directors (esp. Truffault) used the same actors, playing the same characters sometimes, in many or most of their films, so you kind of get to know them and get attached.

Put some masking tape (small pieces) on the back side of the triangle or curve, spaced around the edges and about 1/8 inch in from the edges, to lift it off the paper surface just a little.
If you don't do this, there's a good chance the ink will bleed under the triangle or curve and make a mess of your lines.

I'm a little unclear on the concept, it seems like the bezier curve tool already does everything you describe, except store a commonly-used curve description (in the tool).
But if you repeatedly use a given curve you can make a symbol or cut and paste it.
