French franc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though abolished as a legal coin by Louis XIII in 1641 in favor of the gold louis and silver écu, the term franc continued to be used in common parlance for the livre tournois.
The franc was introduced by king John II of France in 1360.
In January 1960 the French franc was revalued at 100 existing francs.

Franc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The franc was originally a French gold coin of 3.87 g minted in 1360 on the occasion of the release of King John II ("the good"), held by the English since his capture at the Battle of Poitiers four years earlier.
The French franc was the national currency of France from 1360 until 1641, and from 1795 until 1999 (franc coins and notes were legal tender until 2002).
In 1926 Belgium as well as France experienced depreciation and an abrupt collapse of confidence, leading to the introduction of a new gold currency for international transactions, the belga of 5 francs, and the country's withdrawal from the monetary union, which ceased to exist at the end of the year.

The franc was originally a French gold coin of 3.87g minted in 1360 on the occasion of the release of king John II ("the good"), held by the English since his capture at the Battle of Poitiers four years earlier.
The franc was re-established as the national currency by the French revolutionary Convention in 1795 as a decimal unit of 4.5g of fine silver (theoretically slightly less than the livre of 4.505g, though the new coin was set in 1796 at 1.0125 livres, reflecting in part the past minting of sub-standard coin).
In 1865 France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy created the Latin Monetary Union (to be joined by Greece in 1868): each would possess a national currency unit (franc, lira, drachma) worth 4.5g of silver or.290322g of gold (fine), all freely exchangable at a rate of 1:1.

The CFA Franc West and the CFA Franc Central (the Franc of the denomination of the Central African States’ coins) are both backed by the French Treasury and fixed to the French Franc at a rate of 100 CFA Francs = 1 French Franc, with therefore, a fixed rate 665.957 CFA Francs to 1 Euro.
The CFA Franc Central and the CFA Franc West are equal in value to the French Franc but, the coins and papermoney of these two varieties of the CFA Franc are only legal tender in their respective regions.
The intial parity of the CFA Franc to the French French was 1 CFA Franc to 1.70 French Francs, the devaluation of the French Franc saw this change to 1 CFA Franc to 2.00 French Francs in 1948.

The franc zone faced, in the beginning of 2002, with a major event, the disappearance of French franc banknotes and coins that are going to be replaced by the euro, whereas it seems that this extinct currency was at the very foundations of its identity.
However, French francs are certainly held in Africa, as currency of precaution since a very long time, and as an instrument for transferring funds abroad, since the BCEAO as the BEAC decided in 1993 not to purchase their bankbills abroad.
Beyond the symbolic meaning of the disappearance of the franc and a particularly striking fixed rate of 100 CFA francs for 1 French franc, the political range of the introduction of the euro is very important for the franc zone.

At first glance, the franc zone may appear to be a vestige of French colonialism, a long-outdated means by which France still exerts a degree of economic control over its former subjects.
France has seen to it that neither of the two CFA central banks has run a negative account balance, again providing a cushion against excessive borrowing.
Because it is pegged to the French franc, and because the franc has appreciated considerably relative to the US dollar since 1986, the strength of the CFA franc has caused the exports of member countries to become prohibitively expensive, making it almost impossible for local products to compete on the world market.

The CFA franc (in French: franc CFA, or just franc in everyday conversation if no ambiguity is possible) is a currency used in 12 formerly French-ruled African countries, as well as in Guinea-Bissau (former Portuguese colony) and in Equatorial Guinea (former Spanish colony).
When France ratified the Bretton Woods Agreement in December 1945, the French franc was devalued in order to set a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar.
This 0.70 FRF premium is the consequence of the creation of the CFA franc which spared the French African colonies the devaluation of December 1945 (before December 1945, 1 local franc in these colonies was worth 1 French franc).

The CFA franc zone and the EMU   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The prospective shift of the peg of the CFA franc from the French franc to the euro raises a number of questions.
The potential economic consequences on the CFA franc countries could be positive over the longer term, given the general expectation that the creation of the EMU would likely result in a stable euro, low inflation and interest rates, and stronger-than-otherwise output growth in EMU countries.
The main risk is a potential weakening of the external competitiveness of the CFA franc countries, arising from possible complications in the EMU process and the likelihood that the euro might be unduly strong and volatile.
