Topic: French in Action

French in Action - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
French in Action is a French-language course developed by Professor Pierre Capretz of Yale University.
The series uses context and repetition, rather than translation, to teach the meanings of words; except for the first episode, and a brief English-language introduction at the beginning of each subsequent episode, the series is conducted entirely in French.

One of my teachers (a French national) criticised the course for cultural bias (a little upperclass and American) and he has a point, but for a rapid and enjoyable path to fluency, this course can't be beaten.
"French in Action" is a complete, college-level language course intended for students who have aspirations of fluency.
One of the real strengths of "French in Action' is that it puts an emphasis on the French language the way the French actually speak it, which is quite a bit different from the way American phrase books tend to teach it.

Holy crap! We watched these in college French (94-95) and one night I was flipping through the channels and lo and behold there were Mireille and Ousmanne.
J’adore French in Action! I loved French classes in high school and for about 20 years I’ve been looking for something I could do on my own that would help me review what I remember and also learn some new stuff; I found FIA thanks to my local PBS station.
I like it because it gives you real, useful French dialogue instead of the stunted, ridiculous stuff the textbooks used back in the 70’s when I was first learning the language.

allAfrica.com: Côte d'Ivoire: Peace Efforts Redoubled as Fighting Flares in West (Page 1 of 2)
The French have upwards of 3,000 troops in Cote d’Ivoire, sent in initially to protect their nationals and other foreigners.
The protestors hold the French responsible for imposing a peace package on the Ivorian leader which they claim both favours and rewards the rebels, to the detriment of Gbagbo.
It was this information that had incensed Gbagbo’s followers, who immediately went on the warpath against French targets in Abidjan, denouncing the Marcoussis accord as a conspiracy by Paris and a constitutional coup.

 Resources for Learning French
The course starts in French from the first instant, and is built around a story that involves the kinds of day to day activities that are often neglected in literary-oriented language courses.
In learning French, I found that the most difficult words to master were what I came to call "linguistic glue," the adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions that link verbs and nouns into complete sentences.
At some level, you simply have to bash grammar into your head, especially since there are facets of French grammar that have no or very limited counterparts in English (such as many uses of the subjunctive, partitives, and the greater precision of time in French through such tenses as the future anterior).

French in Action is awesome for learning French, if you already know a little.
If someone starts studying French, and their mother tongue was English, the concept of verbs changing based on who is doing the action might take some getting used to.
I think the best way to use FIA is to watch each episode twice, then move on to the next no matter how little was understood.
