French overseas departments and territories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The French Overseas Departments and Territories (often abbreviated DOM-TOM for départements d'outre-mer, territoires d'outre-mer) consist broadly of French-administered territories outside of Europe.
These territories have varying legal status and different levels of autonomy, although all have representation in the Parliament of France, and the right to vote in elections to the European Parliament.
Each inhabited French territory, metropolitan or overseas, is represented in both the French National Assembly and the French Senate.

French Polynesia, which lies in the middle of the South Pacific, consists of four archipelagoes: the Society Islands, the Tuamotu-Gambier Islands, the Marquesas and the Austral Islands, with a total surface area of 4,167 km².
The history of the territory was marked by a struggle for influence between England and France until Queen Pomaré IV requested and obtained the status of a French Protectorate.
The territories entered the French zone of influence in the 18th century for the Crozet and the Kerguelen islands and in the 19th century for Adélie Land, discovered by the navigator Dumont d´Urville.
