In term of beauty I like the french polish finish because it seems to enhance the natural color and grain variations in the wood--it seems to be more closely attached to/penetrate the wood.
A cheap "french polish" finish may take only 10 hours because the finish is not completely filled or an additive such as copal is used which does not stand up to the test of time (with such a finish scratch will appear white).
The disadvantage of french polish is that it is soft and scratches easily.
