This song was based by it's authors on the exploits of HMS Arethusa, when she chased and gave battle to the French ship La Belle Poule in June 1778.
French tactics, was to aim at the rigging with the hope of dismasting the ship, whereas the British struck soundly at the hull.
This was also the situation for many ships after the battles of the Nile and Trafalgar, but such damage did not create a lost battle and in all these cases the British sailor won through.

French ships were usually similar to British ones in terms of size, 90 gun screw ships being around 5000 tons, typical large frigates around 3500 tons and 20 gun corvettes around 2,000 tons, and in armament.
These two ships were famously bad sailors and as a result their sister ships were reworked to produce the Duguay-Trouin class of 90 gun auxiliary steamers.
Most likely all of the 1st class frigates were begun as ships of the Belle Poule class with a displacement of 2550 tons, 54m40 long on deck, 14m10 beam, 7m10 depth of hold and 6m75 extreme draft.

French Directory, although troubled by the scope and cost of the enterprise, readily agreed to the plan in order to remove the popular general from the centre of power.
Napoleon knew the French fleet could not defeat the Royal Navy and therefore arranged to lure the British fleet away from the English Channel so that a joint Spain and French fleet could regain control of the Channel for twenty-four hours, enough for French armies to cross to England.
Eventually the French army was pinned down by a force twice its size at the Battle of Leipzig (October 16 - October 19) at Leipzig.

The renaissance of the French military navy at the time of the American War of Independence was preceded by a great deal of research in the field of naval architecture and artillery.
There were many 12-pdr frigates from which to choose, but the Belle-Poule was the obvious choice since she distinguished herself along with the lugger Le Coureur, as the first ship to be involved in combat action on 17 June 1778 during the Revolutionay War.
History buffs and ship's model builders alike will be captivated by this narrative that documents an actual artillery duel between two ships of comparable strength.

This monograph of the brig LE CYGNE (The Swan) represents a ship's type of the imperial navy.
90 feet in length, with a midship beam measuring 26 feet, 6 inches, a depth of 13 feet, 6 inches, this ship is one of the most representative of the brig called a 24-pdr in the French Navy (the caliber of the carronades in the main armaments).
As is the case in our other monographs, the directions given allow the ship's model builder to choose between constructing a model of Le Cygne or one of her sister ships.

Drafts from the ships of war, and volunteers from the transports, furnished a body of seven hundred seamen for the same employment,—a force to which the Americans could oppose nothing equal, commanded as it was by regular naval officers.
These ships seem to have taken their places skilfully without confusion, and their fire, which opened at once, was rapid, well-sustained, and well-directed; but their position suffered under the radical defect that, whether from actual lack of water, or only from fear of grounding, they were too far from the works to use grape effectively.

The folks responsible for most of the Heller sailing ship range seem to have shared at least two characteristics: enormously talented artisanship, and a near-total lack of understanding of how a real sailing ship works.
