Geologic History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Frenchman Mountain wasn't "created" in its present form: every detail of its structure and appearance is a result of historical happenstance.
In the latest era, Frenchman Mountain can be thought of as a piece of the Colorado Plateau's western edge; twisted, squeezed, and dragged still farther west over the last 13-15 million years by the opening up of the Basin and Range province and Las Vegas Valley.
This follows the general trend of the Frenchman Mountain fault, which creates the western boundary of the tilted block, to a conceptual intersection with the line extended from the base of the Thumb member of the Horse Spring formation.

Chapter Chapter 28 of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
The Frenchman listened in silence, with the same gloomy air, and then suddenly turned with a smile to Pierre.
An heroic action could only be performed by a Frenchman, and to save the life of him, M. Ramballe, captain of the 13th Light Brigade, was undoubtedly a most heroic action.
If Pierre were indeed not a Frenchman, he would hardly on receiving that appellation—the most honourable in the world—care to disavow it, was what the expression and tone of the French officer suggested.

During the French Third Republic, the authorities often referred to notre vieille Nation gauloise ("our old Gallic Nation"), a case in which the adjective gaulois is used with a positive connotation.
