In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

Argentina Reference Information - Politics and Power - Political Parties
In 1997, Frepaso and UCR overcame their differences to form the Alliance, a coalition that is successfully challenging the Peronists' lock on power.
Frepaso came late to accepting the basic tenets of economic policy, including peso convertibility, and still has to reassure financial markets from time to time of its commitment to the economic orthodoxy.
The Frepaso candidate won the Buenos Aires mayoral race in May 2000, partly compensating for the party having done badly out of the carve-up of ministerial posts in the new government.

Alvarez, whose Frepaso has 36 congressmen and women in the 257-member Chamber of Deputies, said that he would continue to support De la Rua.
Frepaso's clout in the government was sharply reduced by Thursday's reshuffle, which benefited the two officials most sullied by the bribe scandal.

Argentina: Congress grants Cavallo emergency powers: Wall Street's man in charge
The loan was conditioned on the Argentine government implementing a new package of drastic austerity measures, aimed at cutting public sector jobs and wages, slashing pensions and imposing new labor codes on the working class.
Popular outrage over the plan forced a breakup of the alliance between De la Rua's Radical Party and Frepaso, a coalition of left-nationalist and reformist groups, many of them spun off by the rightward lurch of Peronism.
Four Frepaso ministers resigned after Cavallo's predecessor, Ricardo Lopez Murphy, who lasted just two weeks in office, unveiled a harsh plan that would have cut public spending by $4.5 billion and axed 80,000 public sector jobs.

As head of a progressive alliance that includes the left-leaning Frepaso Party, De la Rua was poised to make a clean break with the corrupt practices that thrived under his predecessor, Carlos Saul Menem.
Part of the bargain was to jump-start the economy, which had trailed badly during Menem's last year in office.
Though unsubstantiated, rumours that the opposition Peronist party were paid off to vote for a previous package of economic reforms have hurt the image of all parties concerned.

The formation of the Frepaso, uniting almost a dozen small political parties, is a sign of maturation in this area.

"FREPASO is a neophyte party that has become contaminated with the incorporation of some of the people who bear responsibility for the 5,000% inflation we previously had in Argentina," said Menem.
That suggestion, according to analysts, was prompted by the fear of both the Peronists and the UCR that FREPASO threatens the two-party system that has dominated Argentine politics for 100 years.
Bordon's popularity is strongest among those sectors of society that have suffered economically under the neoliberal policies of the Menem administration such as pensioners, laid- off workers in the private and public sectors, teachers who are threatened by education reforms, and small farmers.

The most recent member to break away was Alicia Castro of the Solidarity Country Front (Frepaso), because of her belief that "the Alliance made a mockery of popular will by handing over the country to Cavallo, on whom the people had already passed judgment with 10% of the vote."
Cavallo, former minister of the economy with Carlos Menem’s Justicialista administration, presidential candidate in 1999 and leader of the Action for the Republic Party, was recently appointed to that ministry in a last-ditch effort to solve the profound economic and financial crisis into which the country has plunged.
The re-selected minister of the economy entered the cabinet with the presentation of a bill which includes delegating legislative authority to the executive power in order to adopt measures to surmount the crisis, according to Cavallo.
