Frequency modulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Frequency modulation (FM) is a form of modulation which represents information as variations in the instantaneous frequency of a carrier wave.
Problematically, however, frequency drift or lack of selectivity may cause one station or signal to be suddenly overtaken by another on an adjacent channel.
Note that frequency modulation can be regarded as a special case of phase modulation where the carrier phase modulation is the time integral of the FM modulating signal.

The term "Dm channel" may be used to refer to the control channels used by a mobile station at a given moment, independently of their type.
One frequency channel of the cell allocation shall be used to carry synchronization information and the BCCH, this shall be known as the BCCH carrier.
The radio frequency channel sequence is determined by a function that, in a given cell, with a given set of general parameters, with a given timeslot number (TN), a given mobile radio frequency channel allocation (MA), and a given mobile allocation index offset (MAIO), maps the TDMA frame number (FN) to a radio frequency channel.

Patent 6018543: Noisy channel avoidance method in a digital communication system
If the frequency channel is determined to be noisy, the receiver is tuned to a new reception frequency channel, the new frequency channel being selectable from a group of permissible frequency channels and responsive to the receiver mode and library period and in a predetermined sequence.
Upon determining the current frequency channel to be noisy, the library period containing a profile list of time unit offsets, frequency channels, and modulation codes for the current library period is retrieved from memory (block 120).
After adjusting the RF to the new frequency, RSS samples obtained at the new frequency channel are received and processed in block 30 as previously described to determine whether this particular channel is noisy.

Patent 4394775: Frequency division communication system wherein conventional transmitter-transceiver can be used as a ...
In a single frequency, frequency division, multi-channel cummunication system, a plurality of channels are each allocated a single frequency band, each band being centered on a chosen frequency, the channel center frequencies being spaced apart by a given frequency spacing, for example a frequency spacing of 25 kHz between center frequencies.
The resultant modulated carrier at the intermediate frequency produced at the output of the mixer stage M is amplified by the intermediate frequency amplifier 1 and after demodulation in the demodulation stage 2, the resultant audio signal is supplied to the loudspeaker LS via the audio frequency amplifier stage 3.
The muting stage 4 is sensitive to the presence of a carrier produced at the output of the intermediate frequency amplifier 1 regardless of whether or not the carrier is modulated and, in response to the presence of such a carrier, produces a "high" voltage at its output terminal 15.

The average ratio of the channel peak frequency with a peripheral cue to that with a central– or distributed–neutral cue is not significantly different from 1 (p >.1), indicating that the observers used the same channel to perform the task under the three different cueing conditions.
Moreover, the average ratio of the channel bandwidth (in octaves) with a peripheral cue to that with a central– or distributed–neutral cue did not differ significantly from 1 (p >.1), indicating that the channel’s bandwidth is independent of the cueing condition.
Figure 6 depicts the peak channel frequencies for each of the three observers in the cueing conditions for high- and low-pass noise conditions.

 AllRefer.com - multiplexing (Electrical Engineering) - Encyclopedia
When multiplexing is performed, two or more channels are combined into a single channel, or, in a process often called demultiplexing, a single channel is divided into several subchannels.
One type is frequency-division multiplexing, in which a single frequency channel is subdivided into two or more subchannels, each of which can then carry a smaller range of frequencies than could the original channel.
Frequency-division multiplexing is used in television broadcasting, when audio and video signals share a single channel; in stereophonic FM radio broadcasting, when two audio signals share a single channel; and in microwave transmission of long-distance telephone calls, when 60 or more conversations are carried by a single microwave beam.

Channel storage banks can be easily enabled or disabled while scanning by pressing the number key that corresponds with the desired channel storage bank.
Each channel can be configured with a radio frequency, the desired mode for that frequency, and settings to allow a short delay after a transmission or lock the channel out from scanning operation.
In these types of systems it may be possible to program multiple control channel frequencies into the same channel storage bank and allow the scanner to lock on to the different control channels as you move from zone to zone.

This means that the high frequency listening environment for speakers can be approximated with headphones by crossfeeding about a factor 1/4 of the opposite channel's signal into the other channel, which is reduced by a factor of 1/4, such that it is still unity sound intensity.
Those frequencies above Fl, (1100 Hz.,) the left and right input signals should be combined to produce "near stereo"; the sound in the left ear phone should consist of 75% of the left channel input signal, and 25% of the right channel input signal.
Those frequencies have directional characteristics; if the sound from the left and right speakers are identical, (i.e., monophonic,) the sound would appear to come from a point source directly in front of the listener-for both speakers and headphones.
