		Fresnillo is situated on the Mexican Altiplano, a region of moderately high elevation (-2000 m) between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sierra Madre Oriental.
		In a general sense, Fresnillo is part of a northwest-trending zone of tremendous silver deposits that includes Pachuca to the south and Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Sombrerete, Naica and Santa Eulalia to the north; the trend extends into the United States and includes the Comstock lode.
		The Fresnillo fault is part of a block-faulting episode which occurred in the middle to later Tertiary that caused a regional southward tilt of the Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks (Gemmell et al, 1988).
