Fresno Dome is a dominant granite dome rising in isolation above the forest of Soquel Meadow in the Sierra National Forest in Madera County, California.
John Muir encountered Fresno Dome, then known by its local name of Wamello, in the 1870s, and used its summit to locate Fresno Grove (now known as Nelder Grove).
It is accessible by a trailhead which is a three-mile drive off of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway (part of the National Scenic Byway system).

To the south, along the Fresno River most of the oaks had begun changing colors, which made the valley look as if it had been filled with a sea of fire.
This time I found the trail leaving the parking area heading east even though Fresno Dome was clearly visible to the west.
The trail became a little hard to follow as it dropped to the saddle and wrapped around to the north face of the dome, but by the time it really petered out, our destination was obvious.

The volcano continued to erupt through 1986, piling layers of lava one on top of the next until it formed a lava dome across the top of the mountain.
Activity started again in 1998 when magma rose from about six miles to one mile below the surface, though it never erupted.
