Topic: Frevo

  Frevo in Recife, Pernambuco
Frevo, as a kind of music, has its origins in the repertoires of the military bands in the second half of the 19th century, in Recife.
As with the Gale Frevo, it is to be found exclusively in the clubs and ball-rooms, and the orchestra uses less brass, in favor of the woodwind instruments.
Although Street Frevo is always to be found in all the clubs and ballrooms during the days of carnival, it was in fact, originally created to be performed in the open-air.

The Frevo is normally written in 4/4 time with a strongly weighted beat at the end of each measure (not unlike its cousin, the Baião).
The Frevo is temporarily interrupted by a lovely interlude, opened by a distant sounding horn solo, followed by the oboe and strings.
Upon its return, the Frevo mood now takes the soloist through Paganiniesque variations eventually leading to a coda, a cadenza, and a final orchestral statement in which the middle section theme makes a triumphant return.

Like choro, frevo is closely related to the samba, and has grown and adapted into a more modern sound.

"Frevo" is a type of dance that originated in Recife (a city in Pernambuco, a state in Northeastern Brazil) in the late nineteenth century.
It is based on the syncopations and rhythms performed by military bands in order to allow the "capoeira" dancers (a type of fighting dance/game invented by the African slaves in Brazil) to display their agility in the opening of street presentations during Carnival.
According to Brazilian musicologist Renato de Almeida, the "Frevo" has two sections and the motives are presented antiphonally by trumpets/trombones and clarinets/saxophones.
