Fribourg (French; German: Freiburg or Freiburg im Üechtland, often Fribourg) is a city in the country of Switzerland and the capital of the Swiss Canton of Fribourg on the river Saane/Sarine.
Fribourg was part of the Sonderbund, a "separate alliance" of Catholic cantons, for the short period of its existence between 1845 and 1847.
Consisting of the neighborhoods Bourg, Auge and Neuveville, its old town is rich in fountains and churches dating from the 12th century until the 17th century.

Fribourg is on the main line of railway from Bern (20 m.) to Lausanne (41 m).
Yet, despite all its difficulties, it was in the first half of the 15th century that Fribourg exported much leather and cloth to France, Italy and Venice, as many as 10,000 to 20,000 bales of cloth being stamped with the seal of the town.
From 1803 (Act of Mediation) to 1814, Fribourg was one of the six cantons of the Swiss Confederation.
