Fricative consonants are produced by forcing air through a narrow channel made by placing two articulators close together (e.g.
This turbulent airflow is called "frication." A particular subset of fricatives are the sibilants (sometimes referred to as stridents).
The glottal "fricatives" are actually unaccompanied phonation states of the glottis, without any accompanying manner, fricative or otherwise.

Postalveolar (or palato-alveolar) consonants are consonants articulated with the tip of the tongue between the alveolar ridge (the place of articulation for alveolar consonants) and the palate (the place of articulation for palatal consonants).
Palatal consonants are consonants articulated with the body of the tongue raised against the hard palate (the middle part of the roof of the mouth).

Consonant - Psychology Wiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A consonant is a sound in spoken language that is characterized by a closure or stricture of the vocal tract sufficient to cause audible turbulence.
The word consonant comes from Latin and means "sounding with" or "sounding together", the idea being that consonants don't sound on their own, but only occur with a nearby vowel, which is the case in Latin.
Consonant letters in the English alphabet are B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Z, and usually Y: The letter Y stands for the consonant [j] in "yoke" but for the vowel [ɪ;] in "myth", for example.

First, the fricative noise is consistent with a fricative produced in the post-alveolar region; second, there is a clear formant structure of a vowel of a high front quality `underlying' this fricative not typical of consonantal, or marginal, fricatives.
Again the fricative noise can be seen to co-occur with a clear formant structure, and it is typical of that associated with labiodental (or labial) fricatives in that it is more diffuse and weaker in intensity than that found for other fricatives.
It is not inconceivable, though, that the fricative component of the vowel, characterized earlier as a secondary articulation, is the reflex or remnant of an earlier consonant, and that earlier CVCV (or even CVC) structures have, through various reductive processes, resulted in the present forms exhibiting fricative vowels.

This consonant dimension is known as place of articulation; we will see later that the place of articulation is also relevant when there isn't a complete closure of the vocal tract.
For nasal consonants, the air is allowed to pass through the nasal cavity, but it also resonates in the oral cavity, and the place of articulation (within the oral cavity) distinguishes different nasal consonants from one another.
The consonants that are the least vowel-like are stops, which involve a complete closure of the vocal tract and cannot be pronounced continuously.

The symbol is called "belted l" and should not be confused with "l with tilde",, which corresponds to a different sound, the velarized alveolar lateral approximant.
It should also be distinguished from a voiceless alveolar lateral approximant, although the fricative is sometimes incorrectly often described as a "voiceless l", a description fitting only of the approximant.
It is a lateral consonant, which means it is produced by allowing the airstream to flow over the sides of the tongue, rather than the middle of the tongue.

Every consonant in every human language can be described in a few simple parameters.
An articulate sound which in utterance is usually combined and sounded with an open sound called a vowel; a member of the spoken alphabet other than a vowel; also, a letter or character representing such a sound.
All the consonants excepting the mutes may be indefinitely, prolonged in utterance without the help of a vowel, and even the mutes may be produced with an aspirate instead of a vocal explosion.

The voiced dental non-sibilant fricative is a type of consonantal sound, used in some spoken languages.
Native speakers of those languages sometimes have difficulty enunciating or distinguishing it, and replace it with a voiced alveolar fricative or a voiced dental plosive.
Its place of articulation is dental which means it is articulated with the tongue on either the lower or the upper teeth, or both.

This paper reports on measurements of several acoustic attributes of the fricative consonant /s/ produced in word-initial position by normally speaking adults and by speakers with neuromotor dysfunctions.
Several acoustic properties are evaluated: the spectrum shape of the fricative and its amplitude in relation to the following vowel, the presence or absence of voicing, the time variation of the spectrum during the fricative and in the transition to the following vowel, and the presence of inappropriate acoustic patterns preceding the /s/.
The parameters that show the best correlation with intelligibility and perceptual ratings are (a) measures of deviations from normalcy in the time variation of the acoustic pattern within the consonant and at the consonant-vowel boundary and (b) the spectrum shape of the frication noise.
