 friction on Encyclopedia.com
Friction stir processing technologies: friction stir processing is the only solid state technology that is capable of producing wide-ranging microstructural modifications at localized regions of interest.
On the other hand, in the moving parts of machines a minimum of friction is desired; an excess of friction produces heat, which in turn causes expansion, the locking of the moving parts, and a consequent breakdown of the machinery.
Without friction the wheels of a locomotive could not “grip” the rails nor could power be transmitted by belts.

 Friction Stir Welding
Friction stir welding has been used to weld all wrought aluminium alloys, across the 2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series of alloys, some of which are bordering on being classed as virtually unweldable by fusion welding techniques.

 Friction Stir Welding at TWI
In friction stir welding (FSW) a cylindrical, shouldered tool with a profiled probe is rotated and slowly plunged into the joint line between two pieces of sheet or plate material, which are butted together.
Frictional heat is generated between the wear resistant welding tool and the material of the workpieces.
Consistent with the more conventional methods of friction welding, which have been practised since the early 1950s, the weld is made in the solid phase, that is no melting.
