  tonevendor.com :. Fridge - Eph 2xCD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Over the course of their six year career, London's Fridge have consistently perplexed critics and fans alike with their genre-defying blend of guitars, old school electronics and sturdy breakbeat rhythms.
Suddenly Fridge were pioneers, innovators of a new form of electronic-infused rock music.
Fridge was released from Go!Beat (claiming "unremarkable" sales - go figure) and Eph would become a sort of myth; that brilliant album that so many people have heard of, but no one seemed to know how to get.

BIll Wright Band Press Page   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Colorado’s Bill Wright Band don’t really stick with one constant sound through out their album, “BWB 3” — it is more of a mix of classic and newer rock ‘n’ roll influences combined with just enough country and blues to create a fresh result from old sounds without being in disarray.
For most bands working without a high-priced producer, or major label backing, the first time in a recording studio is mostly a learning experience.
Band members appearing on the recording are: Bill Wright - vocals, guitars, keys, harmonica, and percussion; Geno Sirokman - vocals and bass; Carl Holz - drums and percussion; Kerry Paige - saxophone; and special guest Frank Gonzales - percussion, trumpet and trombone.

Fridge: EPH [Reissue]: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Much of the album has that movie score quality that many of the band's peers were also flogging at the time, Krautishly named tracks like "Ark" and "Aphelion" riding hypnotic grooves for upwards of eight minutes at a time.
It's too bad it kinda sounds dated these days, since Fridge had the goods to be considered one of the top performers of the genre.
The band excels at crafting a happy medium between organics and electronics (guitarist Kieran Hebden is aka Four Tet), with compositions like "Transience" and the horn-stuffed "Bad Ischi" maintaining a fluid, improvised vibe rather than the overly calculated constructions of other post-rock acts.

Around the time we formed the band, I was into the sort of Riot Grrrl or American lo-fi stuff.
There was this band called Quick Space Supersport, and I was going to all their shows in London.
Fridge is coming out on Text in the UK, but it’s coming out on Domino in the rest of Europe, and on a different label again in America.

I had heard some good things about Fridge on a mailing list, so i went and downloaded a couple of tracks from AudioGalaxy.
Anyway, what i think happened here is that the band sat and jammed out these really cool tunes, and then fed them into a computer and played with them.
I think that this means that not only are the three band members talented musicians who work well together, but they are also pretty good producers.

 buzzing like a fridge
I found that the band (including the guitar playing by the lead vocalist) seemed to lack respect for the vocals, in that the music didn't support the voice as much as compete with it.
I felt that throughout many songs the band sounded as though they wanted to be a heavy rock band, and the angelic voice of their lead singer didn't really match their music.
As a very important note, i should say that the primary two exceptions to the band vs. vocals idea were "into your hideout", which is their first single, and "alright" which is my favorite song, and (if everything is right in the universe) should be their second single.

Fridge's music is unlike anything out there, and Eph Reissue is probably the finest example of that.
Located somewhere between magical prog-rock, experimental pop music and the no-boundaries rule of free jazz, Fridge's sound is such a fantastic thing to experience for someone fascinated by music without rules.
Showing more of an electronic side of the band, the songs do make it apparent that it is a band performing these songs, but maybe made up of cyborgs instead of actual human beings.

Orange Fridge formed in June 2000 with Sean and Ryan realising at the age of 14, that their lives were heading towards music.

Fridge always presents some interesting music on its records; the only problem is that they tend to be a bit inconsistent.
From the brilliant early LP Semaphore to much more obscure projects like Indisguise, a joint venture with D, the band is constantly pushing the limits of electro-instrumental music.
Clearly the band spent a great deal of time on the details -- overdubbed second drum tracks and creepy background sounds pervade the album -- but, ultimately, all this hard work pays few dividends.

Windy's hands down #1 favorite album of 1999, Eph is a flawless effort from a band that had finally found their true and rightful sound (in my opinion their earlier releases were more exploratory and too influenced by other bands).
Like Tortoise, the band is totally beloved by the electronica scene yet is resolutely rock in its instrumentation and live performances, with any electronics merely functioning as embellishments to the core sound.
