Born Emma Maria Frieda Johanna Baroness (Freiin) von Richthofen, Frieda Lawrence (1879-1956) was the second of three daughters born to Prussian Baron Friedrich von Richthofen and Anna Marquier von Richthofen.
Her social world was composed of her sisters, with whom she alternately competed for parental attention and allied herself in order to manipulate their parents, the family servants in whose care the girls were generally left, and Prussian soldiers whom she met while playing in the trenches left over from the war.
Frieda made a final visit to England in 1952 to visit her children and meet her grandchildren.

When von Richthofen learned he had shot down Hawker, the Baron painted his plane all red in celebration, after what he received the legendary moniker of Red Baron.
In January, 1917[?], von Richthofen founded a new squadron, the JASTA 11, which ultimately included some of the elite of Germany's pilots, several of whom the Red Baron trained himself in his JASTA 2.
It is also said that the deaths he caused began to cause von Richthofen serious depression, perhaps exacerbated by a wound to the skull he suffered in late 1917 that undoubtedly affected him.

Her father was Baron Friedrich Ernst Emil Ludwig von Richthofen (1844-1915), an engineer in the German army, and her mother was Anna Elise Lydia Marquier (1852-1930).
During their stay, Lawrence was arrested for spying and, after the intervention of Frieda's father, the couple walked south, over the Alps to Italy.

Frieda Lawrence returned to New Mexico in 1933, and in 1935 D.H. Lawrence's ashes were brought to the Kiowa Ranch where a small chapel was built to receive them.
Presented to Gladys Fisher at the Lawrence Ranch in Taos by Frieda Lawrence on July 4, 1937, on the "Day of the Fox." On that day, Gladys Fisher delivered to Frieda the figure of a fox that she had sculpted for a niche in the Lawrence shrine.
