Topic: Friedrich August von Finck

Friedrich August von Finck - LoveToKnow 1911
FRIEDRICH AUGUST VON FINCK (1718-1766), Prussian soldier, was born at Strelitz in 1718.
At the beginning of 1759 Finck became lieutenant-general, and in this rank commanded a corps at the disastrous battle of Kunersdorf, where he did good service both on the field of battle and (Frederick having in despair handed over to him the command) in the rallying of the beaten Prussians.
Later in the year he fought in concert with General Wunsch a widespread combat, called the action of Korbitz (Sept. 21st) in which the Austrians and the contingents of the minor states of the Empire were sharply defeated.

Battle of Maxen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Prussian army of 14,000 men, commanded by Friedrich August von Finck, one of Frederick the Great's most able generals, was sent behind the Austrian armies, with the intention of cutting their lines of communication with Bohemia.
Frederick expected the Austrian general, Leopold von Daun, to withdraw once his lines were threatened, but instead he took advantage of Finck's isolation, and cornered him between three separate armies, outnumbering his force.
His retreat was blocked by the Imperial army, and on the 21st Finck was forced to surrender with his entire army, a crushing victory for the Austrians, although von Daun failed to follow up on his success.

Friedrich's view of the case, that evening, is by no means so despondent as might be imagined: he regards the thing as difficult, not as impossible,--and one of his anxieties is, that he be not balked of trying it straightway.
Friedrich knew well the need of rest; but Friedrich, impatient of things half-done, especially of Russians half-beaten, would not listen to this proposal; which was reckoned upon him as a grave and tragic fault, all the rest of his life; though favorable judges, who were on the ground, Tempelhof for one, [Tempelhof, iii.
Friedrich found at OEtscher nothing but huts full of poor wounded men, and their miseries and surgeries;--he took shelter, himself, in a hut "which had been plundered by Cossacks" (in the past days), but which had fewer wounded than others, and could be furnished with some bundles of dry straw.

Friedrich`s fixed intention is, to march to Neisse all the same; what probably Daun, under the shadow of his laurels and his new Papal Hat, may not have considered possible, with the road to Neisse blocked by 80,000 men.
Friedrich has refitted himself with the requisite new cannon and furnitures, from Dresden; especially with Prince Henri and 6,000 foot and horse,--led by Prince Henri in person; so Prince Henri would have it, the capricious little man; and that Finck should be left in Saxony instead of him.
Friedrich is not triumphant, or shining in the light of bonfires, as last Year; but, in the mind of judges, stands higher than ever (if that could help him much); --and is not "annihilated" in the least, which is the surprising circumstance.

The Koran of Friedrich, or the Lamentation-Psalms of Friedrich!
Friedrich`s notion of suicide, we perceive, is by no means that of puking up one`s existence, in the weak sick way of FELO DE SE; but, far different, that of dying, if he needs must, as seems too likely, in uttermost spasm of battle for self and rights to the last.
Friedrich, glad, at any rate, to have done with that dismal lingering at Buttelstadt, hastens to arrange himself for the new contingencies; to post his Keiths, his Ferdinands, with their handfuls of force, to best advantage; and push ahead after Moritz, by Leipzig, Torgau, Berlin-wards, with all his might.

 Maxen Surrender
However due to a combination of discord among the allies, the effects of the heavy losses suffered by the Russians at Kay and Kunersdorf (some 23,000 of an initial total of 100,000) and effective manouevring by Prince Henry against Daun, the threat did not materialise and Frederick was able to rebuild his army.
Finck himself objected to the orders, but was overruled; interestingly, Frederick himself had written to Prince Henry earlier warning against sending out isolated detachments as Daun, under pressure from Vienna, would move to overwhelm them.
Frederick subsequently held the regiments involved in permanent aversion; Finck himself was put in front of a court-martial after the year, cashiered and sentenced to one year of fortress arrest.

Known as the "Age of Goethe," this era is considered to be one of the greatest in draftsmanship by artists of German-speaking lands.
The exhibition begins with examples by artists born in the 1700s, such as Fuseli and Friedrich, as well as the Rome-based brotherhood of German painters known as the Nazarenes, that sought to revive religious art and fresco painting in the style of Renaissance artists.
(Friedrich's three drawings in the exhibition can be seen in context with A Walk at Dusk, the Getty painting by the artist that hangs in a nearby gallery).
