Friedrich Christian Diez - LoveToKnow 1911
FRIEDRICH CHRISTIAN DIEZ (1794-1876), German philologist, was born at Giessen, in Hesse-Darmstadt, on the 15th of March 1794.
Considering the time at which it was written (1650), it was a meritorious work, but philology was then in the empirical stage, and many of Menage's derivations (such as that of "rat" from the Latin "mus," or of "haricot" from "faba") have since become bywords among philologists.
The difference between Diez's method and that of his predecessors is well stated by him in the preface to his dictionary.

He began his career as a scholar of medieval Provençal poetry and taught literature at the University of Bonn from 1823 to the end of his life.
Diez applied the methodology of comparative linguistics pioneered by Jacob Grimm and Franz Bopp to the Romance languages.
In his Grammar of the Romance Languages (1836–44) and Etymological Dictionary of the Romance Languages (1853), he demonstrated the relationship of “Vulgar” or Spoken Latin to Classical Latin and the evolution of Romance languages from Spoken Latin into their modern forms.

For fifty years Hammer-Purgstall wrote incessantly on the most diverse subjects and published numerous texts and translations of Arabic, Persian and Turkish authors.
It was natural that a scholar who traversed so large a field should lay himself open to the criticism of specialists, and he was severely handled by Friedrich Christian Diez (1794-1876), who, in his Unfug und Betrug (1815), devoted to him nearly 600 pages of abuse.
Von Hanimer-Purgstall did for Germany the same work that Sir William Jones (q.v.) did for England and Silvestre de Sacy for France.
