Friedrich Ernst Dorn was the German physicist who discovered radon in 1900, although his discovery was nearly ignored.
Dorn's announcement of his findings came upon the same time as English physicist William Ramsay revealed his the discoveries of the five other noble gases.
Dorn called his discovery "radium emanation." Ramsay eight years later gave it the name "niton." It was not given the name "radon" until 1923.

Chemical Element: radon (Modern Latin: from radium and argon, its chemical cousin; radioactive gas).
Friedrich Ernst Dorn, while studying the radium that the Curies had discovered, found in 1900 that it gave off not only radiations but a gas that was itself radioactive.
The gas was called “radium emanation” at first, but on closer study it turned out to be a noble gas, the sixth one, and was named “radon”.
Dorn, apparently also called it “niton” after “the element radium” (radon was called “niton” because it was based on the Latin word, nitens, meaning “shining, bright, glittering”).

Radon (named for radium) was discovered in 1900 by Friedrich Ernst Dorn, who called it radium emanation.
In 1908 William Ramsay and Robert Whytlaw-Gray, who named it niton (Latin nitens meaning "shining"), isolated it, determined its density and that it was the heaviest known gas.

Radon was discovered by the German physicist Friedrich Ernst Dorn in 1900.
Dorn's discovery came during the busy period following the discovery of radioactivity in 1896 by the French physicist Antoine-Henri Becquerel.
It was the third radioactive element to be discovered, after radium and polonium, first isolated by Marie Curie and her husband Pierre.
