Friedrich Hirzebruch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich E.P. Hirzebruch (born 17 October 1927) is a German mathematician, working in the fields of topology, complex manifolds and algebraic geometry, and a leading figure in his generation.
The Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem (1954) for complex manifolds was a major advance and quickly became part of the mainstream developments around the classical Riemann-Roch theorem; it was also a precursor of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
Hirzebruch's book Neue topologische Methoden in der algebraischen Geometrie (1956) was a basic text for the 'new methods' of sheaf theory, in complex algebraic geometry.

Michael Atiyah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atiyah is now retired and an honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh and Chancellor of the University of Leicester.
He was one of the founders, with Friedrich Hirzebruch, of topological K-theory, a branch of algebraic topology.
He has collaborated with many other mathematicians, for example with Raoul Bott and Isadore Singer on the developments leading to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.

Atiyah was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow in 1966.
He was one of the pioneers, along with Alexandre Grothendieck and Friedrich Hirzebruch, in the development of K-theory-culminating in 1963 in the famous Atiyah-Singer index theorem, a powerful generalization of the Riemann-Roch theorem.
His early work in topology and algebra-often in collaboration with Raoul Bott, Hirzebruch, or Isadore Singer -- was followed by work in a number of different fields, a phenomenon regularly observed in Fields Medalists.

I then introduced the analogous concept of contour surfaces for functions of three variables, such as the points of equal temperature in a room with a wood stove.
The previous summer, I had attended a series of esoteric lectures at Berkeley given by Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch from the University of Bonn.
Professor Hirzebruch was interested in a surface with many singularities (points where the surface looks like two cones with their points touching) defined using a polynomial in three complex variables:

One interesting generalization of the theory would be to consider the case of singular Abelian covers (the smooth case having been treated by Comessatti [Com] in 1930, and later more thoroughly by Pardini [Par1]).
This generalization should be viewed not only as a nice algebraic calculation, but pretty much in the spirit of Hirzebruch's beautiful constructions of algebraic surfaces as Kummer coverings ([Hir], [B-H-H]).
Finally, another interesting direction of study which one may pursue is the investigation of the surgeries arising when the branch curves acquire more singularities, or become non reduced.

For the past three and a half decades, the name of Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch has been connected with famous results in the areas of topology, algebraic geometry, and global differential geometry, results which all mark the beginning of important theories and which have had an enormous influence on the development of modern mathematics.
Many mathematicians have expanded and generalized Hirzebruch´s ideas.
He himself has always been interested in the beautiful particular case and concrete problem, which he solves by creating new methods that combine unusual geometric, algebraic, and arithmetic intuition.

Atiyah has made many outstanding and fundamental mathematical contributions, especially in areas involving interactions between geometry, topology, and analysis.
In collaboration with his colleague, Friedrich Hirzebruch, he pioneered the development of K-theory, which now is critical to the solution of many important mathematical problems.
The celebrated "index theorem," which he helped to develop, led to new connections between differential geometry, topology, and analysis, and has become an important tool in theoretical physics.
