History of the Monarchy > The Hanoverians > Victoria
She was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, fourth son of George III.
Her father died shortly after her birth and she became heir to the throne because the three uncles who were ahead of her in succession - George IV, Frederick Duke of York, and William IV - had no legitimate children who survived.
In 1864, Victoria pressed her ministers not to intervene in the Prussia-Austria-Denmark war, and her letter to the German Emperor (whose son had married her daughter) in 1875 helped to avert a second Franco-German war.

Under the impact of nationalism the idea of a monarchical brotherhood was replaced by the notion of rulers as archetypal representatives of their respective countries. Resplendent in military uniform, the cynosure of pomp and ceremony, Kaiser Wilhelm II appeared to many of his subjects as the appropriate leader of the young Reich and its aspirations.
The young Emperor had refused to meet his uncle, the Prince of Wales, who also happened to be in Austria, and indeed stipulated that he be kept away from Vienna for the duration of his visit, on the grounds that he was not sufficiently deferential to him.
The Emperor had once again acted in a 'moment of excitement'; and he advised the Queen against 'enquiring too narrowly into the truth' of the Kaiser's private explanation of his actions. The waters in the diplomatic pond were soon smooth again, but a new underwater current had entered it.
