Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl (1806-1876), German scholar, was born in Thuringia.
Ritschl was fortunate in his school training, at a time when the great reform in the higher schools of Prussia had not yet been thoroughly carried out.
Ritschl's examination of the Plautine manuscripts was both laborious and brilliant, and greatly extended the knowledge of Plautus and of the ancient Latin drama.

His father, Georg Karl Benjamin Ritschl (1783-1858), became in 1810 pastor at the church of St Mary in Berlin, and from 1827 to 1854 was general superintendent and evangelical bishop of Pomerania.
Ritschl was professor of theology at Bonn (extraordinarius 1852; ordinarius 1859) and Gottingen (1864; Consistorialrath also in 1874), his addresses on religion delivered at the latter university showing the impression made upon his mind by his enthusiastic studies of Kant and Schleiermacher.
If Ritschl had clearly shown that judgments of value enfold and transform other types of knowledge, just as the spiritual man includes and transfigures but does not annihilate the natural man, then within the compass of this spiritually conditioned knowledge all other knowledge would be seen to have a function and a home.

Ritschl's work made a profound impression on German thought and gave a new confidence to German theology, while at the same time it provoked a storm of hostile criticism: his school has grown with remarkable rapidity.
From this vantage-ground Ritschl criticizes the use of Aristotelianism and speculative philosophy in scholastic and Protestant theology, He holds that such philosophy is too shallow for theology.

The early death of Reisig in 1S28 did not sever Ritschl from Halle, where he began his professorial career with a great reputation and brilliant success, but soon hearers fell away, and the pinch of poverty compelled his removal to Breslau, where he reached the rank of ordinary professor in 1834, and held other offices.
The great event of Ritschls life was a sojourn of nearly a year in Italy (183637), spent in libraries and museums, and more particularly in the laborious examination of the Ambrosian palimpsest of Plautus at Milan.
It forms an introductory volume to the Berlin Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, the excellence of which is largely due,to the precept and example of Ritschl, though he had no hand inthe later volumes.

On the one hand, Since his childhood, Friedrich was emotionally dependent on Elizabeth a great deal, on the other hand, Elizabeth at the time of Friedrich's approach to Wagner went far more radical in the Germanic nationalism which Friedrich did not approve of together with her radical anti-semitism.
In this sense, Friedrich's association with those two dictators of the 20th century was fabricated and contrived by his sister and her philosophical thought and not by Friedrich's at all.
Friedrich Nietzsche was in a sense a philosophical giant standing at the turning of the century with enormous cultural and philosophical impacts on developments of the 20th century European philosophies even including the so-called French postmodernists.

Timothy Moore, Musical Accompaniment in Roman Comedy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Many scholars, however, have accepted the theory of Friedrich Ritschl regarding the basic distinction between diverbia and cantica: diverbia were passages in iambic senarii, during which the tibicen did not play; cantica were passages in all other meters, which were accompanied by the tibiae.
Ritschl's distinction between diverbium and canticum is of great significance, for it means that we can tell from the text which passages were and were not accompanied.
In this paper I will consider the implications of Ritschl's theory for the interpretation of Roman comedy, and I will propose that in performing Roman comedies today, we can recreate at least part of the effect intended by Plautus and Terence if we follow their metrical cues for accompaniment.

In sum, Friedrich Nietzsche grew up as a Christian, and his personal life was marked by tragic events which eventually led him to question the Christian outlook and valuation of life, including the idea that the cosmos is, at its core, morally and good-naturedly constituted.
Nietzsche was also taught by Friedrich Ritschl (1806–76), a specialist in the Roman classics, who was particularly expert on the Roman comic poet Plautus (254–184 bc).2 All of these subjects – classics of tragedy and comedy, genealogy, music, philology – remained with Nietzsche for the rest of his scholarly life.
