Friedrich Wilhelm Schneidewin (June 6, 1810 - January 11, 1856), was a German classical scholar.
Schneidewin's work on Sophocles and the Greek lyric poets is of permanent value.
Schneidewin was also the founder of Philologus (1846), a journal devoted to classical learning, and dedicated to the memory of KO Müller.

German classical scholar, was born at Helmstedt on the 6th of June i8ro.
In 1833 he became a teacher at the Brunswick gymnasium, in 1837 extraordinary and in 1842 ordlinary professor of classical languages and literature in the univeisity of Gottingen, where he died on the 11th of January 1856.
Schneidewin was also the founder of Philologus (1846), a journal devoted to classical learning, and dedicated to the memory of K. Mtiller.

His father, the classicist Friedrich Wilhelm Schneidewin, fearing that his brain might have been injured, leaned over him and said: "Max, lieber Max, was ist das Geschlecht von Ensis?" ".
Gildersleeve reposes in the university cemetery here, and I have paused by his grave more than once.
