Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué (February 12, 1777 - January 23, 1843), was a German writer of the romantic movement.
Although not originally intended for a military career, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué ultimately gave up his university studies at Halle to join the army, and he took part in the Rhine campaign of 1794.
Between 1810 and 1815 Fouqué's popularity was at its height; the many romances and novels, plays and epics, which he turned out with extraordinary rapidity, appealed exactly to the mood of the hour.

GERMAN LITERATURE - LoveToKnow Article on GERMAN LITERATURE
Friedrich Holderlin (1770I843), one of the most gifted poets of this age, demonstrates no less clearly than Tieck the essential affinity between Sturm und Drang and Romanticism; he, too, forms a bridge from the one individualistic movement to the other.
Friedrich Spielhagen (born 1829) followed immediately in Gutzkows footsteps, and in a series of romances from Problematische Naturen (1860) to Sturmfiut (1876), discussed in a militant spirit that recalls Laube and Gutzkow the social problems which agitated German life in these decades.
His Mecklenburg novels, especially Ut de Franzosentid (186o), Ut mine Festungstid (1863) and UI mine Stromtid (1862-1864), are a faithful reflection of Mecklenburg life and temperament, and hold their place beside the best German fiction of the period.

From 1820 onwards the quality of Fouqus work rapidly degenerated, partly owing to the fatal ease with which he wrote, partly to his inability to keep pace with the changes in German taste.
Most of Fouqus works have been translated, and the English versions of Aslaugas Knight (by Carlyle), Sintram and his Companions and Undine, have been frequently republished.

De Quincey more than once revels in grotesque and arabesque terrors, though with a desultoriness and learned pomp which deny him the rank of specialist.
Villiers de l'Isle Adam likewise followed the macabre school; his Torture by Hope, the tale of a stake-condemned prisoner permitted to escape in order to feel the pangs of recapture, being held by some to constitute the most harrowing short story in literature.
De la Mare does not make fear the sole or even the dominant element of most of his tales, being apparently more interested in the subtleties of character involved.

Her prime weaknesses, aside from the habit of prosaic disillusionment, are a tendency toward erroneous geography and history and a fatal predilection for bestrewing her novels with insipid little poems, attributed to one or another of the characters.
In the sub-plot where the Marquis de las Cisternas meets the spectre of his erring ancestress, The Bleeding Nun, there are many enormously potent strokes; notably the visit of the animated corpse to the Marquis's bedside, and the cabalistic ritual whereby the Wandering Jew helps him to fathom and banish his dead tormentor.
Many passages and atmospheric touches in this tale reveal Fouqué as an accomplished artist in the field of the macabre; especially the descriptions of the haunted wood with its gigantic snow-white man and various unnamed terrors, which occur early in the narrative.

 SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE (1927, 1933 - 1935) by H.P. Lovecraft
It is too long and too diffuse, and much of its potency is marred by flippancy and by an awkwardly excessive reaction against those canons of decorum which Lewis at first despised as prudish.
Nevertheless they are of the keenest interest and poignancy; suggesting with marvelous force the imminence of nameless terrors, and the relentless dogging of an ill-starred individual by hideous and menacing representatives of the outer flness.
Among the earliest of Poe's disciples may be reckoned the brilliant young Irishman Fitz James O'Brien (1828-1862), who became naturalised as an American and perished honourably in the Civil War.

Their Germanic style can be seen in the early painting Faun and the Fairies, which also served as a wood-engraved illustration to Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Pilgrims on the Rhine (1834).
After the success of his paintings in the early forties based upon Shakespeare's tragedies Macbeth and Hamlet, Maclise returned to German-derived "fairy" subject matter in his Scene from Undine (1843), based upon a story by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué.
The focus of the scene is upon the water nymph Undine's placatory reaction to the confrontation between the Christian knight Huldbrand, her lover, and Undine's father, the water spirit Kuhleborn.
