In gay slang a Friend of Dorothy is the term for a gay man.
Saying at a social gathering that another man was a "friend of Dorothy" was a way of discussing sexual orientation without other people knowing what you were discussing.
However, it has also been theorized that the Dorothy referred to is in fact Dorothy Parker.

 Dorothy Reddington
Dorothy Reddington was no mystery to me. Yes, when Laurie and I walked into Sage Chapel on the Cornell University campus for her memorial service, Roy Orbison's "Mystery Girl" was playing.
One friend said, "Dorothy once told me that basically she would be friends with anybody who wanted to be friends with her." And she would be a good friend, for life.
Friend after friend stepped up to the pulpit and spoke of Dorothy's love, her laughter, quoting from the authors she loved, and making me cry just because I was in a room filled with people who understood the beauty and the power of the written word, a whole room filled with readers, Dorothy's friends.

Cruise Critic Cruise Styles: "Friends of Dorothy" Meetings
Alternatively, a ship may list many FOD meetings in their programs, but the crew and staff may turn out to be less friendly than on a ship with no FOD meetings at all; the meetings are not surefire indicators of how comfortable gay or lesbian couples will feel onboard during the entire cruise.
The availability and frequency of Friends of Dorothy meetings onboard ships are progressing in a positive direction alongside greater acceptance and tolerance toward gays and lesbians in mainstream society.
FOD meetings are by no means the end-all; on the small luxury ships like Regent, Silversea, SeaDream or Crystal, not having the meetings doesn't mean you won't have just as much fun or meet as many gay compatriots on your own.
